Irish golf star Shane Lowry has revealed the true meaning of his viral phrase after swearing multiple times live on national TV.
The TV cameras and microphones picked up the 2019 Open champion saying ‘f*** this place’ at three of the four majors in 2025, and Lowry has shed some light on the reasons why.
Shane Lowry has shed some light on the true meaning of his viral three-word phrase used at three of the four major championships in 2025.
The Irishman is eying Masters success this year, looking to add a second major title to his 2019 Open Championship victory at Royal Portrush. However, the 38-year-old didn’t exactly have a fun time at the majors last year.
In fact, 2025 was one of the worst years for Lowry at the majors, with two missed cuts, a T40 at The Open and a tie for 42nd at Augusta. At three of the four majors last year, the Offaly man was spotted verbally abusing the golf course.
Lowry shouted ‘f*** this place’ at the US Open at Oakmont, the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow and The Open at Royal Portrush. The only major Lowry wasn’t picked up saying his viral three-word phrase was at The Masters.

In an interview in Dubai with golf journalist Dan Rapaport, Lowry revealed the true meaning of his viral three-word phrase:
“There are certain courses that I don’t like. It’s funny because I obviously finished second at Oakmont the last time, so I’m at Oakmont I’m saying it.
“But like, I’m about 12 over par for the tournament, what do you want me to say? I just three-putted.
“I hit a lovely wedge shot into a 10-feet on par five to the back-left pin and I three-putted. You know, what do you want me to say?”

As previously explained, Shane Lowry was quick to vent his frustration verbally at three of the four major championships last year.
Microphones picked up Lowry shouting ‘f*** this place’ at least once at Royal Portrush, Oakmont and Quail Hollow, with this three-word phrase having since gone viral on social media for the Irishman.
After landing two major sponsorship deals ahead of this year’s 2026 campaign, Lowry may well have to watch his mouth or else he could be on the receiving end of some penalties from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.
I went through every shot at Augusta. He didn’t say it. The closest he came was after his errant second on the 5th, which ultimately led to double and ended his tournament. It seems like he mutters something filthy, but can’t decipher what it is pic.twitter.com/2s2r5i8auw

Lowry’s frustrations were clear when shouting his catchphrase at three of the four majors last year, but the 38-year-old has defended himself when questioned on it by Dan Rapaport:
“Do you want me to say this is great? Like it’s so much fun out here shooting 12-over, and made to look like an idiot?
“Feel like you’re hitting decent shots into greens and they’re just rolling off into the rough and you can’t get up and down,” said Lowry with a humorous tone.
The Mullingar-born golfer will be hoping for a stronger season in 2026, particularly at the four majors. Lowry looks in reasonable form already at the beginning of the season, and will be hopeful of carrying that into the majors in April and beyond.
