Leon Edwards Roasts Ian Machado Garry With Brutal Assessment Of His UFC Career

Former UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards has slammed Ian Machado Garry with a brutal roast of his UFC career.

Edwards feels Garry is living off not being finished by Shavkat Rakhmonov, who is the only man to beat ‘The Future’ in MMA.

Leon Edwards Roasts Ian Machado Garry With Brutal UFC Assessment

Former UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards has some strong words for fellow 170-pound contender Ian Machado Garry.

‘Rocky’ has slammed Garry and given a brutal assessment of his UFC career to date, dismissing his UFC Welterweight Title chances and totally downplaying his credentials as a world-class mixed martial artist.

Despite the Irishman climbing to #2 in the latest UFC welterweight rankings, Edwards feels that Garry is living off the fact that he wasn’t finished inside the distance by Shavkat Rakhmonov in their UFC 310 fight in December 2024.

Rakhmonov remains the only man to have beaten Garry inside the cage, which Edwards feels is actually Garry’s biggest achievement in MMA.

Although Garry beat former champion Belal Muhammad last time out, who became the champion by taking the belt of Edwards, the Englishman feels ‘The Future’ has done nothing in his career of note:

“[Ian Machado Garry’s] biggest achievement in the sport is losing to Shavkat. That’s facts. His greatest achievement is that he can brag he didn’t get finished,” said the former UFC champion.

Edwards’ assessment of Garry is somewhat similar to that of Ali Abdelaziz, who revealed that some UFC higher-ups labelled Garry ‘boring’, hence the reason he could be left in the cold and not granted a shot at Islam Makhachev and the welterweight belt next.

Will Leon Edwards and Ian Garry Fight?

Leon Edwards’ brutal assessment of Ian Machado Garry’s resume is yet to get a response from the Irishman himself, but has kicked off some talk of a potential showdown between the pair.

Although Garry feels he has done more than enough to earn his shot at the UFC Welterweight Title and is now ranked no.2 behind former champion Jack Della Maddalena, he may well be forced to have at least one more fight before getting his shot at the 170-pound belt.

Some fans are now talking of a possible match-up between Edwards and Garry, particularly after the recent comments from the former welterweight king about his potential rival.

Former UFC welterweight Ben Askren feels Garry has earned his shot at Makhachev and the belt, but he may well have to take one more fight in the interim to make himself undeniable. Garry vs Edwards could well be that fight.

Although Edwards is now ranked down at eighth following three consecutive defeats to Bella Muhammad, Sean Brady and Carlos Prates, he is a former champion and could likely land a major fight due to his pedigree and status as a former welterweight king.

Two of Edwards’ last three defeats have come to fighters Garry has beaten in Prates and Muhammad, with the Irishman almost certainly an overriding favourite to beat ‘Rocky’ if the fight was made.

Although it is unlikely and Garry won’t want to fight anyone else other than Makhachev next for the belt, stranger things have happened in MMA and UFC President Dana White may feel the fight makes sense. Time will tell whether that is the case or not.
