Paul McGinley has issued an update on the Team Europe Ryder Cup captaincy ahead of the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor.
The 2014 winning Ryder Cup captain has detailed his conversations with Luke Donald around a third successive captaincy.
Paul McGinley has issued an update on Team Europe’s Ryder Cup captaincy ahead of the 2027 event at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland.
The Irishman, who captained Europe to victory at the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, recently met with Luke Donald and has shed some light on the conversations they shared about golf and the 2027 Ryder Cup.
McGinley knows Donald better than most, having served as his strategic advisor in recent years. Donald picked McGinley’s brains on multiple occasions over the past few years, ever since he was announced as the 2023 Ryder Cup captain.
Since then, Europe of course blitzed Team USA at Marco Simone in Rome at the 44th Ryder Cup, before then going back-to-back earlier this year with victory on US soil at Bethpage Black in New Year at the 2025 Ryder Cup.
There has been talk that Donald could well serve a third stint as captain in an attempt to become the first third person to captain Team Europe for three consecutive Ryder Cup’s.
Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallagher are the only other two former European Ryder Cup captains who have led the team for three years on the spin, with Jacklin actually doing in on four consecutive occasions.

McGinley provided an update on where Donald’s head is at and the potential of the former world number one returning for a third term as Team Europe captain for the 46th Ryder Cup at Adare Manor.
“I honestly don’t think that [Luke] knows what he wants to do yet,” said McGinley.
“He’s still so undecided as to what the future is. He’s going to take Christmas and make a decision early in the New Year,” the Irishman told the Irish Independent.
Donald has remained tight-lipped about the prospect of captaining Europe for a third successive term. However, McGinley feels if he wants the job, it’s there for him:
“We really need to appoint somebody by February or March next year. And there’s no doubt that if he goes for three in a row, that will be an even better achievement. But it’s going to be very, very difficult to try to win three in a row.”

With Shane Lowry confirming retirement plans, Justin Rose on the back-nine of his career and even Rory McIlroy closing in on 40, some of the Team Europe stalwarts from Luke Donald’s tenure as captain may view the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor as their last.
The biennial tournament returns to Ireland for the first time since 2006, where The K Club in County Kildare hosted the team golf event. The 46th Ryder Cup in 2027 will mark 21 years since the last time the contest was held in the Emerald Isle.
Donald remains the favourite to lead Europe in their bid for a hat-trick, with former Open champion Francesco Molinari also an option. There are several other names in the picture too, but Donald and Molinari remain the front-runners.
Donald has employed Molinari as vice-captain in both of Europe’s famous wins in 2023 and 2025, with the Italian having represented Europe himself as a player too.

Although the general consensus amongst golf fans is that the job is Donald’s if he wants it, Paul McGinley explained this isn’t necessarily the case and the process of appointing the 2027 Europe Ryder Cup captain could be a tricky one:
“There’s a lot of people who have input. The players have obviously been important. They will have input. Guy Kinnings [DP World Tour chief executive] will have input. The Players Committee will have input.
“All of those views will be gathered and hopefully we’ll come up with a winning formula again like we did with Luke. It could be Luke again, who knows?”
No matter who captains Europe at Adare Manor in 2027, you can guarantee that career Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy will be on the team.
McIlroy was the second most googled athlete globally in 2025, and looks set to be Europe’s talisman again in 2027. Whether that be under Luke Donald’s captaincy remains to be seen.
