Europe and the USA might be preparing battle it out for the Ryder Cup at New York’s Bethpage Black golf course this year. But one eye is already on the next edition of the competition to be held in Europe.
Limerick’s Adare Manor will host the 2027 Ryder Cup, the 46th edition of the competition that is played every two years. It will also mark 100 years of the Ryder Cup.
The course is owned by Irish billionaire JP McManus. it has also hosted the Irish Open in 2007 and 2008. With Pádraig Harrington becoming the first Irish winner in a quarter of a century in 2007.
Owner of Adare Manor, McManus, said: “We are honoured to be hosting one of global sports’ biggest events at Adare Manor. Now that the dates have been announced, the anticipation for the 2027 Ryder Cup will continue to grow. As we countdown to becoming the next host venue.
“Hosting golf’s greatest team contest will provide many economic benefits to the Irish economy and the south west community in particular. With thousands of people travelling to be part of the Ryder Cup’s 100th anniversary.
“We look forward to welcoming the many international visitors to Ireland, Limerick and Adare in two years’ time. And to showcasing our island to a global audience.”
It is also the second time a golf course in Ireland has hosted the Ryder Cup. In 2006, the K Club in Kildare had the honour of becoming the first-ever Irish golf course to host. Those of a European persuasion will be hoping that’s a lucky omen. When it comes to Europe’s chances of winning the Ryder Cup.
2006 saw Europe, captained by Ian Woosnam, beat the American team. It would be Europe’s most dominant victory on home soil, thrashing America 18.5 to 9.5.
The 2027 competition will feature four days of build-up to one of golf’s greatest competitions from the 13th to the 16th of September. The action then tees off on the 17th of September before concluding on Sunday, the 19th.
Speaking on the 2027 Ryder Cup, Guy Kinnings, the chief executive of the European Tour Group, said. “The official announcement of the dates is always a significant milestone in the Ryder Cup journey for a country and a venue.
“Rory McIlroy’s victory in the Masters last month to complete the career Grand Slam, combined with the anticipation of July’s Open Championship [at Royal Portrush]. Has already heightened the buzz around golf on the island of Ireland.
