What Is the RTÉ Sport Sportsperson of the Year Award?

The RTÉ Sport Sportsperson of the Year Award is the most prestigious individual honour in Irish sport. Presented annually, it recognises the athlete who has delivered outstanding performances, major achievements, and lasting impact over the course of the year. Winners are judged against Ireland’s best across all sports, making it a true measure of excellence on a national scale.

To win the award multiple times is a rare achievement and places an athlete among the very elite of Irish sport.

Why Rory McIlroy Won It Again in 2025

McIlroy claimed the RTÉ Sport Sportsperson of the Year Award for the third time after a superb and defining 2025. His performances throughout the year combined world-class success, consistency, and global influence, setting him apart from every other nominee.

McIlroy enjoyed a standout season on the PGA Tour, recording multiple victories in the strongest fields in world golf. Competing against the world’s best players, he consistently delivered at the highest level, a key factor in his selection. Alongside his long-awaited maiden Masters win and his contribution to Europe’s Ryder Cup win in New York this year.

Major championships played a key role in his success. McIlroy repeatedly challenged on golf’s biggest stages, producing high-pressure performances that reinforced his reputation as one of the game’s elite competitors. Majors define careers, and his ability to remain competitive year after year highlighted his resilience and class.

Beyond trophies, McIlroy’s global impact played a huge role in his win. As one of Ireland’s most recognisable sports stars, he represented Irish sport on the world stage with distinction. His presence at major tournaments, leadership in team events, and ability to attract worldwide attention elevated Irish sport internationally.

Winning the award for a third time underlines McIlroy’s sustained excellence. Very few athletes manage to stay at the top of their sport for so long, especially in a global, highly competitive environment like professional golf. His longevity, professionalism, and continued hunger for success set him apart.

In a year filled with strong Irish sporting achievements, McIlroy once again stood above the rest. His elite performances, consistency on the biggest stages, and worldwide influence made him a deserved winner of the RTÉ Sport Sportsperson of the Year Award, cementing his status as one of Ireland’s greatest ever sportspeople.
