Leona Maguire hoping to return to form at US Women’s Open

Leona Maguire is hoping to shake off her bad form when she competes at the US Women’s Open.

The Cavan native is the sole Irish entrant at this year’s tournament, which will be played at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.

Leona Maguire experiencing rocky patch ahead of US Women’s Open

Maguire has had a hard time as of late, missing the cut in her last two tournaments. Which has led to many conversations about her form in the lead-up to the US Women’s Open.

To add to her woes, her ranking has taken a complete nosedive in the last year. Maguire has seen herself fall from 31st in the world to 80th.

The 30-year-old rose to prominence after an excellent showing in the Solheim Cup. She has also won the LPGA Tour twice. In 2024, she became the first Irish woman to win on the Ladies European Tour.

Her record at the US Women’s Open in particular could do with some much-needed improvement. She has missed the cut at the US Women’s Open in four of her six appearances. A record Maguire would surely love to change this week.

Focus on US Women’s Open

Speaking ahead of her first round at the US Women’s Open, Maguire said:

“I just haven’t quite got all the pieces together and on the same week yet,” Maguire said. “Some good improvements off the tee. Some weeks I’ve putted well, some weeks I haven’t.

“And then my approach play just needs to tidy up a bit. So I’m just trying to get all the pieces of the jigsaw together on the same week. It’d be nice to do it this week.

“I think the long hitters are going to have an advantage .“But around the greens is so tricky. “Precision is also going to be very important. Miss a green by a foot, and you could be 70 yards away with some of the runoffs.

“A lot of it is more to do with the bogeys you don’t make, rather than the birdies you do. Nobody’s been making a ton of birdies out there, so it’s just being very, very patient and very disciplined.”

Maguire will be looking to kick on and improve on her average season so far. The Irish woman has demonstrated in the past her competitive streak and she should work on the areas of the game she spoke about in the aforementioned quotes, then she could find herself in the mix.

With a cool $12 million dollar prize pot on the line, Maguire tees off alongside Hyo Woo Kim and Gaby Lopez from the 10th tee at 7.14pm Irish time.
