JJ Spaun was the last man standing at Oakmont Country Club to defy the odds and win the US Open.
The American, a 120/1 shot before a ball had been hit, sank an incredible 64-foot putt on the 18th hole to claim his first major title.
Oakmont’s unforgiving rough and lightning-quick greens were causing havoc all week.
Spaun looked to have been another golfer who had succumbed to the course’s difficulty after bogeying five of the opening six holes.
However, when a downpour stopped play, it allowed the 34-year-old to reset on the back nine.
He was the only player to finish the tournament under par, ahead of Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland.
Spaun’s dreams looked to be getting away from him until his first birdie of the day on the 12th hole.
With MacIntyre and Hovland breathing down his neck, Spaun shot three-under par on his final seven holes – including birdies at 17 and 18 – to claim victory.
Although the crowning moment came at the final shot of his tournament.
Spaun just needed a two-putt to ensure his US Open crown from 64 feet. With players four putting on Oakmont’s greens, anything could have happened.
With MacIntyre watching on and Tyrell Hatton pausing his post-round interview, Spaun’s putt sensationally dropped into the back of the cup.
It sent the drenched fans wild on the sidelines, and it was a fitting end to a chaotic tournament in Pennsylvania.
“I never thought I would be there holding this trophy,” he said.
“I’ve always had aspirations and dreams but a few months ago I didn’t know what my ceiling was and how good I could be.”

It was a frustrating week for Rory McIlroy despite an impressive three-under par final round on Sunday.
There were plenty of question marks surrounding his motivation and mentality heading into the tournament.
After narrowly making the cut, he finished the tournament on seven over and tied for 19th.
On Saturday, the media finally had the chance to speak with McIlroy. It was his first post-round interview at a major since winning the Masters in August.
And he used it as an opportunity to share his frustrations with the media.
It stemmed from the PGA Championship, where his name was leaked after it was found that his driver was deemed non-conforming.
He said: “It’s just frustration with you guys [some sections of the media].
“I have been totally available for the past number of years.
“That [driver issue] was a part of it but at Augusta I skipped you guys on Thursday. It’s not out of the ordinary as I’ve done it before, but I am doing it a little more often. I feel like I’ve earned the right to do whatever I want to do.”
