AS Roma sporting director drops positive Evan Ferguson clue over future amid transfer interest

Evan Ferguson has been given the biggest clue yet regarding his AS Roma future by the club’s sporting director.

Ferguson has had questions over his Roma future in recent months with his goals tally left wanting.

The Republic of Ireland hitman has found the net five times in 21 appearances for the Serie A giants.

And despite putting in a shift for the most part and doing his part in other areas, his stats have been poor.

That is where manager Gian Piero Gasperini has been unsure on Ferguson and considered cutting his loan short.

The big man, 21, has never fully endeared himself to his boss who has had his doubts.

Everton fancy Ferguson and the Toffees would be willing to make a January move if he leaves Rome.

But the club’s transfer chief, Frederic Massara, has dropped a hint that he wants Fergie to stay.

Evan Ferguson earns positive reinforcement from Roma chief

Amid all the rumour and speculation on what might be next for the Ireland cap, he has picked up an injury.

And for director Massara, that has been a major disappointment.

The Italian feels Ferguson has proven himself to be a capable forward for the club and has shown quality.

So, according to the chief, it does not sound like the attacker will be going anywhere any time soon.

“Evan Ferguson leaving? Ferguson has been showing off all his qualities lately,” Massara said.

“It’s a shame he’s injured now, but we hope to have him back soon. We’re counting on it.”

Gaffer Gasperini also had his say on Ferguson after he was subbed off vs Sassuolo through injury.

The veteran boss acknowledged that his loan player has consistently improved during his spell in Italy.

However he issued a challenge for Ferguson to continue learning.

He also urged the player to continue to find motivation even amid all the uncertainty.

He added after the game: “He’s grown since the beginning.

“The important thing now is for him to grow in terms of motivation.

“To understand that Roma is a great opportunity for him.”

Where Ferguson could go if he leaves AS Roma

Ferguson would be understood if he fancied a crack at a different club where game time was more guaranteed.

Celtic have been linked with the Brighton man while Fulham want Ferguson and countryman Troy Parrott this window.

With Robinio Vaz and Donyell Malen arriving in January, Ferguson’s minutes may slim down.

And that would put him at risk of missing out on a World Cup playoff spot vs Czechia.

Fergie will be determined to feature in that game come March.

So goals and playing time are absolutely necessary from now until then.
