Daryl Gurney ‘had to be held back’ from rival Gerwyn Price backstage

Daryl Gurney reportedly had to be held back by two security guards following his heated on-stage exchange with rival Gerwyn Price.

The Northern Irishman and Price reignited their feud after their World Matchplay contest on Monday evening.

After Gurney fell to a 10-7 defeat following their first-round clash in Blackpool, he took offence to Price’s overexuberant celebrations.

Gurney mocked his celebration before the duo went to shake hands. An extremely firm handshake was followed by several verbal exchanges.

Price walks away, but Gurney has another word and the two share further verbal blows before heading backstage.

However, that only seemingly further escalated the issue, according to former professional Vincent van der Voort and host of the Darts Draait Door podcast, Damian Vlottes.

Daryl Gurney had to be held back from Gerwyn Price

Just as Price was going to speak to the press, Vlottes recalled: “Gurney was literally at the door with his head round the corner.

“Two security guards had to hold him back. He clearly wanted to confront Price again.” Van der Voort then said: “He was ready for a nice, friendly chat!

“I only spoke to Daryl afterwards. All he said was, ‘I didn’t do anything wrong.’ He was angry—really angry. There was no calm conversation. He made it clear he’s not a fan of Price.

“He was absolutely fuming. Still insisting he did nothing wrong, that it was all on Price.

“But I imagine Price would say the opposite. There’s so much emotion involved. I don’t mind it though, adds spice to the sport. As long as it doesn’t turn physical, this sort of tension has its place.”

PDC imposes a ban on the press

Further reports have emerged stating that the PDC proposed a ban on journalists asking Price questions about the incident.

Price’s interview with reporters immediately after raised eyebrows when none of the questions were aimed at his feud with Gurney.

Soon after, reporter Phil Barrs wrote on Twitter: “We were told before the press conference that no questions were allowed about what happened on stage.”

Vlotted further added: “No questions about it were allowed. We had plenty lined up, but we were told not to ask. That wasn’t the journalists, it was the PDC’s decision.

Van der Voort then replied: “That’s where they fall short, in my opinion. It’s a shame. Sport is emotion, and this sort of thing happens in every sport.”

Price is back in action on Thursday and is the heavy favourite to beat Chris Dobey with Irish bookmakers.
