Troy Parrott delivers transfer blow to Leeds United over his future

Troy Parrott has delivered Leeds United a transfer blow by committing to AZ Alkmaar beyond the January transfer window.

The in-form Ireland striker is likely to be a wanted man after scoring 19 goals in his last 19 games for the Dutch side.

Leeds have been linked with Parrott after his goalscoring heroics sent Ireland into the World Cup play-offs.

Daniel Farke’s side have dropped into the relegation zone and need a striker to help with their survival bid.

Everton are also reportedly showing an interest, with A Z Alkmaar likely to hold out for €31million to let the 23-year-old leave.

Troy Parrott sets record straight on future

With Parrott set to reunite with Irish opponents Shelbourne in the Conference League on Thursday, he was quizzed on his future following the recent speculation.

Parrott responded: “Since I’ve been here, things have been going well.

“It’s getting better and better, actually. The club has helped me develop. I have to keep faith in that.

“The way they help me, they help me develop. I want to stay here. I feel comfortable and happy here. I’m showing progress. I love playing here. So I’m completely focused here.”

It’s no wonder Parrott wants to stay loyal to the club that has made him feel at home.

He had five loan spells across the Championship, League One and the Eredivisie before landing a first permanent move when AZ Alkmaar spent €8m on him in the summer of 2024.

Parrott, who had plenty of promise when he made his Tottenham debut under Jose Mourinho aged 16, struggled to live up to his reputation in the early stages of his career.

Now his patience and AZ Alkmaar’s faith in his ability mean they are both being rewarded.

Manager Maarten Martens was also asked about his main man, in which he reiterated that he “hopes” Parrott will stay with the club.

He responded: “Troy was fantastic. When one of our players plays for his country, you hope they do well.

“That doesn’t always happen, but if you do it by scoring and leading your country to the play-offs, then we’re happy too.

“The whole club is proud when one of our players does well. He’s still young, developing well. What he’s done for us for a year and a half and is now doing for his country. That makes us proud.

“I hope he stays with us. That’s the plan. I still believe he can make some further progress with us.”

Parrott’s popularity grows with huge increase in shirt sales

Staff at AZ Alkmaar’s club shop confirmed that they have seen a huge increase in orders from Ireland for Parrott’s shirt.

One staff member said: “Normally we get three or four orders from Ireland, but since the match last week we are getting 50 to 60 a day – just from Ireland.

“He’s a striker, so shirts with Parrott on the back, with all the goals he’s been scoring here, he was the most popular shirt anyway. But now it’s growing.”
