Washington Commanders insider Lake Lewis Jr believes wide receiver Terry McLaurin will sign a contract extension before training camp begins.
If that is indeed true, the clock is ticking ahead of training camp getting underway on Tuesday, July 22 and the chances of it happening look slim at best.
Lewis Jr spoke about the situation on his self-titled YouTube show: “I think when training camp starts, Terry McLaurin will be out on that football field. He will be in camp. I truly believe that.”
McLaurin is preparing to enter the final season of a three-year, $68.2 million contract extension he signed with the Commanders back in summer 2022.
His annual wage of $23.2 million per year is 17th among wideouts in the NFL and following the news of the New York Jets handing $32.5 million a year to Garrett Wilson, the market has undergone a shake-up.
Last year, McLaurin set the franchise record for most touchdown catches in a season with 13 and earned second-team All-Pro honors.
He also marked a fifth consecutive year recording at least 1,000 receiving yards but admitted earlier this month it’s been a while since he spoke with Washington about an extension.
“I think there has to be some active discussions. Like I said, we haven’t talked in over a month, and with camp around the corner, it’s becoming a little bit of crunch time.
“I don’t necessarily know what happens next, but without any progressive discussions, it’s hard to see how I step on the field.”
The Commanders are going to make it as difficult as possible for McLaurin to skip training camp, imposing $50,000 fines for each day missed.
There is a way around that if he reports to camp and stages a hold-in, refusing to practice until the situation is resolved and avoiding any penalties like Ja’Marr Chase did last season.

We can assume that eventually the team will pay McLaurin what he wants. Washington won an impressive 12 games in 2024, reaching the NFC Championship and the receiver is star quarterback Jayden Daniels’ favourite target.
McLaurin has helped lead the franchise since entering the NFL in 2019 and it’s no surprise he feels he deserves a payday. According to the best Irish bookmakers, McLaurin is 14/1 to lead the league in receiving touchdowns next year.
He’s even money to tally 1,000 yards in the air again and 11/4 to lead the Commanders in total touchdowns.
