Three Suggestions As NFL Coaching Search Heats Up

It’s that time of year when NFL teams looking to rebuild are vying for the best coaching talent on the market. Of the current head coaching vacancies in the NFL, three openings check the most boxes. Baltimore could be best setup for an immediate turnaround, while Atlanta showed progress down the stretch and are in a winnable division. Then the New York Giants offer a big market that can attract free agents plus a young quarterback who has the attitude for the big apple.

Baltimore Ravens: a roster built for immediate success with lofty expectations

Baltimore parted ways with John Harbaugh, after nearly two decades leading the Ravens. But This is viewed as the top opening because the Ravens are one of the most well-run franchises in the league. They’re structured, consistent, and expect to compete every season.

There won’t be much grace period for the new hire as whoever takes over will be expected to have this team back in contention quickly. The upside of that is joining an organization that already knows how to build a contender. However, the downside is there could be a short leash in turning things around after missing the playoffs this year. 

This Ravens roster is ready to compete now behind Lamar Jackson, with a playoff, battle tested core and a team identity that should be ready to bounce back in 2026. The defense has been the team’s heartbeat for years, but 2025 saw Baltimore’s one time calling card become its biggest liability.

Top candidate and potential best fit: Jesse Minter’s defensive blueprint

Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is an emerging candidate for multiple openings, and the fit is logical. Baltimore needs to prioritize defense again. Minter can bring that focus back and hire an experienced offensive coordinator to oversee the other side of the ball. A quick transition, minimal culture shock. With as few moves in free agency and getting younger through the draft, Baltimore could be back in the mix this time next year. 

Atlanta Falcons: a talent-rich roster ready to compete in the NFC South

Atlanta is the right hire away from transforming into a top NFC contender. After moving on from Raheem Morris, the Falcons just need the right fit and they could be set up as an NFC contender for the next decade. They have the resources, roster potential, and a division that might be the weakest in the league. 

It feels like their QB of the future is already in the building Michael Penix Jr. despite a season ending injury, running back Bijan Robinson is already a top backfield threat and wideout Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts round out what could soon be one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. 

Top candidates and best fit: John Harbaugh or Klint Kubiak

John Harbaugh makes sense as a culture builder who can stabilize expectations quickly. Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak offers upside, with a fresh offensive perspective. The best fit: Harbaugh, because of his proven leadership as a Super Bowl champion and prolonged success in Baltimore.

New York Giants: A young QB and draft picks

Brian Daboll is done in New York after a 4–13 season, and the next coach will inherit equal parts opportunity and headache. The biggest selling point is QB Jaxson Dart, plus the fifth overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft. That’s a wealth of resources right there. 

Three goals, no excuses: develop Dart with a consistent system, set a tougher weekly standard in the locker room, and stop bleeding late-game losses. That fifth pick helps, whether it’s protection, pass rush, or another blue-chip starter.

Harbaugh fits here, too, maybe even better. A veteran head coach can calm the noise, protect a young quarterback from chaos, and make the building feel normal again. He should also be better equipped to deal with the New York media than a first-time head coach.
