Has The Bills’ Time Finally Come To Win Super Bowl?

It’s time for the hungriest city in the United States to get the championship it has been chasing for so many decades. The Bills are the team and Buffalo is the city. Most football fans know the story that the Bills won the AFC championship for 4 straight years from 1990 through 1993 and lost the Super Bowl each time.

The Bills have been fighting to get back there ever since. The Bills have represented Buffalo since 1960, the year the American Football League was founded. That league was the dream come to life of Lamar Hunt, the man who fell in love with professional football in the 1950s and was rebuffed in his desire to own an NFL franchise by Chicago Bears owner George Halas and his buddy, George Preston Marshall, who owned the Washington Redskins.

Once Hunt understood that he could not buy an NFL team or get an expansion franchise, he started his own league, and Buffalo was one of the key cities in the league. Ralph Wilson owned the Buffalo Bills and he built a team that won the AFL championship in 1964 and ‘65.

There was no Super Bowl in those days, and if there had been, it’s unlikely they would have beaten the NFL champions. The 1964 Cleveland Browns had Jim Brown, perhaps the best running back in NFL history. The ‘65 Packers were a legendary team under Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr at quarterback, and they would go on to win the first two Super Bowls.

The Bills have not won a title since those AFL days, but this year’s team could be different. They have the great Josh Allen at quarterback and he has excellent support from James Cook at running back.

Allen has completed 69.3 percent of his passes this season, thrown for 3,668 yards with 25 TDs and 10 interceptions. He has also run for 579 yards and an amazing 14 touchdowns. Cook led the NFL in rushing with 1,621 yards, has averaged 5.2 yards per carry and he had 12 TDs.

Allen willed the Bills to a 27-24 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card round. The Jaguars are a good team that had a great year but they have not sacrificed or faced pain like the Bills. Fortune smiled on Buffalo in that comeback victory over the Jaguars.

There is a long journey still to come, and it will be a difficult one. The Bills must go to Denver to take on the top-seeded Broncos in the divisional playoffs.

Denver has won Super Bowls in the past, so that city has been rewarded. The Bills have to face a powerful team, but Allen is a much more accomplished quarterback than Bo Nix, the second-year QB of the Broncos. The Bills are playing for history, and if they can beat the Broncos on the road, they will have to go on the road one more time in the AFC Championship Game.

If they can win that game, they will have their opportunity in Super Bowl XL. The Bills are dreaming of that now, but they are not about to speak of it. They have too much work to do before they get there. But it is time and this should be the year.
