Gavin Cromwell confident Inothewayurthinkin can bounce back from Savills flop

Gavin Cromwell is confident Inothewayurthinkin can bounce back from his flop in the Savills Chase.

Spirits were high in the Cromwell camp heading into the Leopardstown showpiece over Christmas, optimistic the Gold Cup hero would enjoy a huge step forward from his fifth on reappearance in the John Durkan Chase.

However the JP McManus-owned eight-year-old went alarmingly backwards, taking a significant walk in the market from 2/1 co-favouritism to an SP of 13/2 and he ran accordingly – beaten over 41 lengths and the last of nine finishers.

Inothewayurthinkin has been trounced a combined 94 lengths in his two starts this season, showing zero signs he retains the ability to dine at the top table.

Cromwell revealed on his William Hill blog that the horse is all sound and no imperfections were discovered in the aftermath, teeing up a redemption mission in the Irish Gold Cup at the end of January.

“We were very disappointed with Inothewayurthinkin in the Savills Chase. He never travelled in the race and he barely even travelled to the start.

“The main thing is that he’s come out of it sound, we’ve done all our usual checks and we didn’t find anything wrong. He seems to be freshening up a bit and hopefully we can get him back on track.

“He’ll have an entry in the Irish Gold Cup and that’s where we want to go next with him. He’s still working away fine at home and we know the ability is there, we just have to get him right.”

The son of Walk In The Park has always hit the peak of his powers in the spring, as seen when impressively downing the hat-trick seeking Galopin Des Champs at Cheltenham last year.

In 2024 he landed the Kim Muir Challenge Cup at the Festival in a canter before winning the Grade 1 Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree.

Some have suggested Inothewayurthinkin’s herculean performance in the Gold Cup has left a mark on the eight-year-old, one that could be incredibly tough to recover from.

While he didn’t show a great deal in the build-up to Cheltenham previously, fifth in the Savills (beaten 15 lengths) and fourth in the Irish Gold Cup (beaten seven lengths) were at least performances to build on.

This time around though, there appears to be no solid foundation to work from and on current form it’s fair to say he has a mountain to climb to get back to being the elite staying chaser seen not long ago.

Bookmakers are taking zero chances on the horse despite his puzzling preparation, still the 6/1 Gold Cup joint-favourite.

According to Timeform, Inothewayurthinkin (172) is the third-highest rated jumps horse in Britain and Ireland behind Galopin Des Champs (175) and Il Etait Temps (174).
