Troy Parrott’s outstanding performance against Portugal has Tottenham Hotspur fans wishing the Irish starlet was still playing in Tottenham colours.
Parrott scored two goals in Ireland’s 2-0 World Cup qualifier win over Portugal, and his overall performance has turned heads not just among Ireland fans but fans of the north London side.
The result means Ireland go into their final qualifier with Hungary needing a win to secure a play-off spot, although another permutation is that the Republic could very well end up winning Group F should things go their way and more.
Troy Parrott’s career so far
Parrott joined Tottenham Hotspur’s academy in 2017 and made his first-team debut for the north Londoners in 2019.
Despite early promise, he struggled to break into the first team, and as such, he spent much of his time away on loan at Millwall, Ipswich, MK Dons and Preston but failed to make a real impact in England.
However, his 2023-24 loan to Dutch side Excelsior proved more productive, where he scored 17 goals.
In July 2024, he left Spurs permanently, joining AZ Alkmaar for around £6.7 million, and he has since become a real fan favourite with the Dutch club and has developed into a very useful player, scoring six goals in seven appearances so far this season in the Eredivisie.
The Dubliner demonstrated his ability perfectly on Thursday night, which has left Spurs fans regretting the decision to let him go on social media.

Despite Spurs being fifth in the Premier League, they have no real out-and-out striker, with Richarlison being their top scorer so far with four goals when it comes to the league, while defender Micky van de Ven is their top scorer in all competitions with six. Parrott could have easily filled that hole in the Spurs’ attack, but you could also argue that his spell in the Netherlands has made him the forward he is.
In the aftermath of Ireland’s win over the Portuguese, one Spurs fan replied with a video of his post-match interview acknowledging that the Londoners are in desperate need of a striker like him with “We could do with him now, couldn’t we?” Another added, “He’s a fine instinctive finisher who was destined to play for Spurs.” A third user said, “Obviously a late developer, maybe we should have loaned him in the Prem and could have done the business for instead of the Dutch League ffs”
