Scott Brown insists Johnny Kenny ‘will get there’ despite Celtic struggles

Scott Brown is adamant Johnny Kenny “will get there” despite recent Celtic struggles.

The Republic of Ireland striker has not had his troubles to seek this season so far.

Kenny stuttered vs Dundee United in one particular flop while he has also struggled in other matches.

Under Martin O’Neill Kenny did hit the goals trail with four in five fixtures.

But those have dried up under Wilfried Nancy.

Nancy was sacked by Celtic, though, which gives Kenny a chance to link-up with O’Neill again.

And that can only benefit the 22-year-old.

Scott Brown backs Celtic striker Johnny Kenny

Celtic hero Chris Sutton filleted Kenny and recently insisted the striker “isn’t good enough” for the club.

And that was a sentiment seemingly shared by supporters.

Another ex-Hoops striker, John Hartson, demanded a forward in the January transfer window.

Which obviously did not show any faith towards Kenny after another blank.

But Brown, the former captain, took a different opinion.

For Broony it is all about providing support for the striker.

Attackers need confidence and Brown has looked to give the ex-Shamrock Rovers attacker just that.

He pointed towards the attributes Kenny does have.

And he believes it is a matter of time before he shows he’s capable of playing for the Scottish Premiership giants.

“I thought Kenny was really, really good against Rangers in the first half,” said Brown.

“Running power, playing off (John) Souttar’s shoulders, and stuff like that.

“He is there. He is young, and he is keen. He will get there. It’s goals that they just have to score.”

Brown’s recommendation certainly holds weight where Celtic fans are concerned.

The former skipper won it all in Glasgow and captained the club to 22 trophies across his 14 year stint.

Kenny’s Celtic form not good enough

So, when Brown speaks, supporters listen.

Some may already have made up their minds on the Irishman.

His run of form of eight games without a goal cannot be protected at a club like Celtic.

And with the winter window now open, it’s likely O’Neill will dip his toe in to sign at least one new striker.

That could see Kenny brushed aside with an exit potentially on the cards.

But that is no guarantee, either.

We told you recently how Pat Bonner defended Kenny as he claimed the striker was not to blame.

Celtic’s failings under Nancy have come all over the pitch and Kenny criticism has come out of frustration.
