Robbie Keane gets glowing Celtic manager recommendation from surprise source

Celtic could do worse than hire Robbie Keane as their next permanent manager.

That is, at least, according to one surprise source who is Hoops-daft.

Keane played for Celtic back in 2010, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, under Tony Mowbray.

It was a relatively successful personal stint for the hitman where goals and assists were concerned.

He found the net 16 times in just 19 appearances and chipped in with two set-ups.

But for the club it was a torrid season and manager Mowbray was sacked.

Keane was even named player of the year, despite only arriving on a short-term basis in the January.

Rod Stewart urges Celtic to name Robbie Keane manager

But that five or so months were enough for some to still, 16 years later, feel the connection.

Celtic sacked Wilfried Nancy which left a gaping hole in the dugout for this term.

And rocker Rod Stewart – a humungous Hoops fan – hopes Keane is given the reins at the end of season.

The singer-songwriter believes it would be “heaven sent” for the current Ferencvaros gaffer to join at Parkhead.

And as the Maggie May crooner celebrated Nancy’s axing, he tipped Keane to replace him.

“He’s gone! He’s gone!” Stewart said on Nancy who was binned with six defeats from eight games.

“And maybe we could get Robbie Keane.

“That would be heaven sent.”

Stewart was hardly speaking out of turn where Nancy was concerned.

The general consensus among the supporters was that the Frenchman had run his course and had to go.

Celtic next manager candidates

The former Columbus Crew manager changed the Celtic set-up which clearly did not work.

He left Glasgow with Celts sitting third in the Scottish Premiership and six points behind leaders Hearts.

A spot Celtic have not been in for a number of years as domestic dominators.

Martin O’Neill is Celtic interim boss for the second time this campaign and has a tough task on his hands.

But the Irishman insists he is up for the task.

The 73-year-old did acknowledge that it’s unlikely he takes the gig beyond the end of term.

That has led to speculation as to who could come in to Lennoxtown and do the job.

Current assistants in the interim, Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham, might fit the needs in future.

Then Keane is also on a shortlist, as he was before Nancy arrived.

Wales manager Craig Bellamy – who also turned out for Celtic on loan – is another who has been named as a possible candidate.
