Robbie Keane has refused to rule out becoming Celtic manager in future after he was linked with the job this season.
The Republic of Ireland icon was an option to take the reins at Parkhead following Brendan Rodgers’ shock resignation.
Keane’s name was mentioned by numerous sources and news outlets as a candidate for the role but eventually Wilfried Nancy would become Hoops boss and would take Irish assistant Kwame Ampadu with him to Glasgow.
That obviously put an end to the speculation regarding Keane and his future with Ferencvaros in Hungary where he currently manages.
But with a Europa League tie on Thursday against Celtic’s rivals Rangers to come for Keane’s squad, the media in attendance in Budapest opted to grill the 45-year-old about the possibility of him joining Celts last month.
The retired former Tottenham, Liverpool and Wolves striker was honest when explaining how he never held official discussions with the Scottish Premiership giants.
And he insisted he remains happy where he is and fully committed to Ferencvaros as they chase the league title this term as well as European success.
“No, my mind is just here, I’m very happy here,” he said when asked if he’d spoken with Celtic.
“It’s been a really good year. It’s been a successful year. We won the league last year. We’re doing well in Europe now. We’re at the top of the league. I’m really, really enjoying it.
“We have good people here. They are good people to work for. That’s what Alex Ferguson says every time I see him, he always tells me the same thing. ‘Don’t just go to a team just because of the things, it’s the people who run the club that matter’.
“And this club is run very well. From the President to the sporting director, and everybody involved. I couldn’t be more happy here. I can’t help speculation.”
When pressed on if he would ever be interested in becoming Celtic boss in future, the Irishman was coy in his answer.
Although he did admit he would be open to a discussion should it ever come his way.
“You can never say never in football. Of course. I’m one of those guys that I never think too far ahead. I can’t. I have to concentrate on what I do because you take your eye off the ball here, then you start losing games and you lose your job.
“So never say never, of course. But at the moment, I’m very, very happy here.
“As I said before, it’s a fantastic club. The stadium is amazing. The training ground is great.
“The fans are incredible, very like the Celtic fans in terms of how loud they are and being really passionate about their team.”
