Chris Sutton applauds Martin O’Neill for Brendan Rodgers-esque Celtic decision

Chris Sutton has applauded Martin O’Neill over a Celtic complaint that Brendan Rodgers would’ve been proud of.

Rodgers resigned at Celtic before being accused by shareholder Dermot Desmond of being out for himself.

That blast came after the former manager had publicly complained about his side’s lack of transfer work in the summer window.

The Irishman was never scared to air his grievances and issue subtle demands to the hierarchy.

But it didn’t work out for Rodgers in the summer as Celts failed to strengthen adequately.

They also crashed out of the Champions League to minnows Kairat Almaty.

The 52-year-old was furious and his reign ended after yet another moan to the media about deals.

Rodgers is with Al-Qadsiah in Saudi now.

Martin O’Neill applauded for challenging Celtic board

But with January in full swing and one loan signing in the door, O’Neill has now done something similar.

And yet, rather than receive backlash, O’Neill has been hailed by ex-Hoops striker Sutton.

The interim boss insisted that Celts would be “in trouble” if they don’t add to their squad.

And Sutton was chuffed that his old gaffer stood firm and issues his indirect demand with the boardroom surely listening.

After watching Celtic dismantle Dundee United 4-0, Sutton reflected.

“The most important thing from Celtic’s point of view (getting back to winning ways),” he said on Sky Sports.

“I am really pleased that Martin said that.

“He said, ‘If they aren’t going to bring players in, they could be in serious trouble.’

“So, that’s now the message to the board.

“Just because you have beaten Dundee United. Wiped the floor with them. They certainly need help.

“The games are coming thick and fast.”

Where Celtic must strengthen in January transfer window

Celtic are sitting third in the Scottish Premiership division after a torrid recent few months.

Wilfried Nancy takes the unwanted crown of worst Celtic boss ever with six defeats in eight.

But the club acted fast enough for O’Neill to be given the January window to strengthen.

Kyogo has been linked again with the Hoops while other players are also on their shortlist.

Either way, they need to bolster their frontline while another centre-half would be ideal.

Celtic have also been tipped to sign a midfielder, at least one, and a winger.

Johnny Kenny flopped vs Dundee United and has fired blanks in other fixtures.

Daizen Maeda, meanwhile, is arguably not good enough in front of goal to be considered a striker.

He may be more suited positionally to being deployed as a wing-back given his workrate and press.
