Munster Rugby and the IRFU have confirmed a two-year contract extension for hooker Diarmuid Barron, keeping the 27-year-old in red until 2028.
Barron has become one of Munster’s most reliable front-row operators. In 97 appearances and racking up 3804 minutes for the Red Army. He has crossed the line 12 times and has already captained Munster in 13 competitive matches.
A product of Cashel RFC and Rockwell College, Barron first made headlines in 2015 when he helped Rockwell lift the Pinergy Munster Schools Senior Cup. He joined the Munster Academy in 2018 and made his senior debut later that year, coming off the bench against Cardiff in September.
Diarmuid Barron has made a name for himself in Munster colours
After making seven appearances while still an Academy player, Barron earned promotion to the senior squad in 2020. His breakthrough season arrived in 2021/22, when he featured 22 times and made his Champions Cup debut, announcing himself as a major asset for the province.
By 2022/23, Barron had become a consistent force in the squad. He played 22 games and scored five tries as Munster powered their way to the URC title, showcasing his threat in attack and reliability in set-piece and breakdown work.
Barron continued to lead by example last season, making 19 appearances and earning the honour of captaining Munster for the first time in a high-stakes clash with Ulster in November 2023. His form and leadership have made him a cornerstone of the squad as Munster looks to build on recent success.

On the international stage, Barron has represented Ireland at U20 level and has also appeared for Emerging Ireland and Ireland A. His strong performances have now been rewarded with selection in the Ireland XV squad for next Friday’s clash with England A at Thomond Park.
This new deal secures a key figure for Munster’s forward pack and guarantees continuity in a player who has already proven he can deliver at the highest level.
Barron’s blend of power, mobility, and leadership means he will remain a major influence in Munster’s ambitions for the next two seasons and beyond.

Munster hoping to find form against Glasgow this Friday
Munster are in action in the United Rugby Championship as they travel to Glasgow Warriors on Friday, and they announced their team on Thursday afternoon and will be looking to build momentum in the URC as the season progresses.
Barron can make a real impact in this kind of high-tempo battle by anchoring the set-piece with accurate throwing and tireless work around the breakdown.
His experience and leadership will be key in securing quick ball and stabilising the forward platform. A dominant performance from him could help Munster control territory and possession, giving their backs the platform to strike and tilt the game in their favour as they look to kick on with the rest of their season.
