William Buick likely to ride St James’s Palace hero Field Of Gold in Sussex Stakes

William Buick is likely to ride St James’s Palace hero Field Of Gold in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Juddmonte’s retained jockey Colin Keane is expected to face a ban of 14 days after appearing to use his whip eight times when winning the Listed Gala Stakes on Windlord at Sandown on Friday, July 4.

Eight is two above the permitted level of six on the Flat and the whip review committee will resolve the matter on Tuesday. Penalties begin two weeks after the date of the hearing.

With the Sussex Stakes taking place on July 29, Keane’s ban would start on the 22nd meaning he’d have to watch the race from home – for which Field Of Gold is 4/6 with the best horse racing betting sites.

Racing reporter Nick Luck revealed on his daily podcast he thinks it’s more than likely Buick will don the famous pink, green and white silks on the day in West Sussex.

“I think it’s an odds-on shot that William Buick will take the ride on Field Of Gold, provided Charlie Appleby doesn’t have anything important to run in the race.”

The chances of Appleby running anything in the race look slim at best following the news his main entry Notable Speech has been supplemented for the July Cup at Newmarket this weekend.

Buick, Godolphin’s retained rider and stable jockey to Appleby, is expected to have the Field Of Gold assignment fall kindly into his lap for a yard he has enjoyed plenty of Group 1 success with this season.

At Royal Ascot last month, he steered Ombudsman to victory in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes before landing the Gold Cup on Trawlerman for John and Thady Gosden.

Field Of Gold obliterated his rivals at the Royal Meeting in the St James’s Palace Stakes, posting a career-best RPR of 131 and leaving both the French and English 2,000 Guineas winners in the dust.

The son of Kingman was a beaten favourite in the Newmarket Classic when Ruling Court was the fortunate recipient of a decisive first run but it’s safe to say you can put a line through that form.

The three-year-old made amends in the Irish renewal at the Curragh three weeks later when Keane hopped on board for the first time, collecting the spoils in taking fashion by nearly four lengths.

Following Goodwood, the two-time Group 1 winner is expected to step up in trip to ten furlongs in the Juddmonte International Stakes at York on August 20.
