Renowned sports psychologist Caroline Currid has been described as a “mother figure” and “huge player favourite” as she prepares to return to the Limerick hurling setup for 2026.
A key figure in the 2018 All-Ireland triumph and the early four-in-a-row era, Currid was notably absent during Limerick’s unsuccessful Liam MacCarthy campaigns in 2019, 2024, and 2025.
After two years away from the Treaty’s panel, her return has been well received by the county’s senior hurlers.
Limerick really happy to have Caroline Currid back in their backroom team
In an interview with the Irish Examiner, which first broke the news of Currid’s return to Limerick. The Shannonsiders’ Cathal O’Neill was full of praise for the sports psychologist: “We’ve nearly all worked with Caroline, so we know what she brings. Obviously, she’s a huge player favourite, and we were all in favour of her coming back. She kind of brings that bit of calmness to the group, so we’re just delighted to have her back and delighted to be working with her for the coming year.
“She kind of is that mother figure for us, that we’re able to bounce ideas off her. If we have a problem, we can go to her. She’s just that calming voice, and you can be sure that she’s going to make it somewhat better or go away completely. We’re just really happy to have her back,” said the centre-forward who plays his club hurling with Crecora/Manister
Asked if that calming voice would have been particularly beneficial during the two-week gap between their Munster final penalty shootout defeat to Cork and shock All-Ireland quarter-final exit at the hands of Dublin, O’Neill replied that “it’s hard to know”.
One man who believes her influence would have been beneficial during that period is former Limerick hurler Niall Moran, who brought up that point in June when Dublin sensationally knocked them out of the All-Ireland at the quarter-final stage.

Caroline Currid returns to Limerick’s backroom team for 2026, rejoining John Kiely alongside experienced coaches like Paul Kinnerk, Alan Cunningham, John Flavin, Liam Cronin, and Ger Barry. As a sports psychologist, naturally, Currid will focus on player mindset, wellbeing, and performance. Following the news last month that she will be a part of the Limerick backroom team in 2026, we highlighted how she can drive them to success.
On the field, Limerick will rely on core stars such as Kyle Hayes, Nickie Quaid, and William O’Donoghue, while emerging players like Patrick O’Donovan are expected to step up.
With Declan Hannon retired and several previous squad members absent, fresh talent have opportunities to make an impact. Currid’s return aims to strengthen both the mental and tactical edge of the team.
