Cork have named Shane Barrett as captain ahead of their Munster Senior Hurling Championship clash against Waterford at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
The 2024 All-Star and Blarney clubman Barrett has been named Cork captain in place of the injured Robert Downey.
Barrett will be hoping to finally lay down a marker in this year’s championship. The forward has had a frustrating championship so far after such an impressive season last year
He impressed in the league earlier this year with a goal against Limerick and put in solid shifts against Tipperary and Kilkenny.
On those occasions, he found himself on the scoresheet as Cork found some nice momentum at the start of the year.
Towards the end of the league, he put in a memorable performance against Clare, scoring 1-4 before helping Cork book a place in the league final in their win over Galway.
He troubled the scoresheet again in Cork’s Division 1A final win over Tipperary, the Rebel County’s first league title for 27 years
He picked up two points for himself in the championship opener against the All-Ireland champions, Clare, before he was red-carded.
Barrett was suspended for Cork’s big win over Tipperary, but failed to make an impact in the heavy defeat by Limerick.
Cork’s summer is on the line ahead of this Sunday’s game. Lose and it’s over.
Waterford will keep their summer alive and advance into the preliminary All-Ireland quarter-final in what looks set to be a bumper attendance.
The Rebels can qualify for the preliminary quarter-final with a draw, while they’ll be looking forward to a Munster final with a win and they beat Tipperary’s score difference.
Cork will also be without Niall O’Leary and Declan Dalton, while Ethan Twomey drops to the bench.
Their replacements are Cormac O’Brien at wing-back and Brian Roche in midfield. Also in the starting 15 are Ger Millerick at corner-back and Seamus Harnedy at half-forward.
