Lando Norris said he “made a fool of himself” after crashing into his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri.
The duo were battling it out in a tense head-to-head in the closing stages of the race when Norris clipped the back of Piastri.
It came as he attempted to take advantage of DRS and grab the inside line at the Canadian Grand Prix into turn one.
However, he misjudged the space Piastri had left and went into the back of him, breaking his suspension and ruling him out of the race.
Piastri was left undamaged and went on to finish fourth, behind winner George Russell, Max Verstappen and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Lando Norris paid the price for his mistake
The 25-year-old was happy to put his hands up and admit his error.
It could prove costly at the end of the F1 season with Norris now 22 points behind his team-mates in the Drivers’ Championship.
Speaking about the incident, he said: “I didn’t expect to pass Oscar on the outside into Turn One.
“It’s just, I should never have gone for it, I guess is my complete hindsight.
“I thought he was starting to drift a little bit to the right, so I thought I had a small opportunity to go to the left. But it was way too much risk, especially on my team-mate.
“So, happy nothing happened to him. I paid the price for my mistake.
“Rule number one is to not make contact with your team-mate, and that’s what I did.
“McClaren is my family and I race for them every single and try and do well for them on and off the track, and do well for myself.
“So when I let them down like this and make a fool of myself like I did today, I have a lot of regret. I’m not proud of myself, I feel bad and I’ve let down the team.”
Piastri was more than willing to accept the apology and said the incident won’t affect their relationship.
He responded: “Lando is a very good guy and it is in his character and personality to say when he thinks, even if that is detrimental to himself.
“It is good for the team going forward that we can have these conversations and race like this and have things not go the way we want and get through them.”
