Warren O’Hora makes case for Republic of Ireland call with Hibs form ahead of World Cup playoff

Warren O’Hora has been quietly going about his business for Hibs this season.

The central defender has captained the Easter Road outfit a number of times this term and shown his experience.

He is a proud Irishman and will certainly have ambitions of playing for his country at a high level.

So with O’Hora performing well at the back for his club side, why has he not been called up by his nation?

Manager Heimir Hallgrimsson is always in need of defensive options with Liam Scales struggling at Celtic.

Hibs may be fifth in the Scottish Premiership and two spots behind the Hoops and his countryman.

But where confidence is concerned, Hibs are outdoing their own expectations as Celts falter.

Scales has become a vital cog in the Ireland set up under Hallgrimsson.

So it is highly unlikely the 27-year-old will be shipped out with such a massive fixture on the horizon.

After all, the World Cup playoff semi-final vs Czechia in Prague is just around the corner in March.

But O’Hora should still be considered for a shout by the gaffer perhaps to partner Scales in the backline.

Even if he doesn’t start for the Irish, 26-year-old O’Hora still arguably deserves a crack at the A team.

He is an under-19s graduate while he also turned out for the 18s as well.

But that is as far as O’Hora’s international career has got so far.

That should all change when Hallgrimsson goes through his squad pool and looks towards the Hibs man.

The club have shipped 24 goals in the Premiership, that’s true.

Why Heimir Hallgrimsson must take look at Hibs’ O’Hora

However, David Gray’s lads have improved from last term so far and continue to make strides.

O’Hora has spent his season so far walking younger players through games with consistency beside him not necessarily guaranteed.

That should perhaps show the national boss of his capabilities of thinking on his feet and working smarter.

He has also shown himself to be adaptable with a change of system being made by the head coach.

O’Hora never blinked.

He has experience on the European stage, too, as he played in two Europa League qualifiers in pre-season.

O’Hora also did well in Conference League qualifiers before ultimately Hibs found it a step too far to progress.

The defender is a Brighton academy graduate which shows the level he started out.

He was snapped up by former Rangers boss Russell Martin at MK Dons and he also turned out for Bohemians in his home country.
