Ireland supporters may have to fork out a cost around €1,650 if they want to watch their team at the World Cup.
A Troy Parrott masterclass has ensured their play-off spot; now they’ll have to wait to find out their opponents on Thursday.
Ireland’s hopes could be dependent on whether they secure their place in Pot 2, with the World Cup qualifying permutations now clear.
Their last-gasp victory over Hungary saw supporters clamour to buy season tickets for next year. That allows them to join a loyalty scheme, which increases their chances of purchasing a ticket for a World Cup game.
If Ireland qualifies for the tournament for the first time since 2002, supporters may want to start saving now.
The ticket
Let’s start with ticket prices.
These are going to vary massively depending on the fixture itself. Each fixture in the group stages will be split into categories.
The cheapest ticket, which will be a category four game during the group stages, will set a supporter back $100 (€86).
That’s a huge increase in comparison to the World Cup in Qatar.
A category three game will be $150 (€130), a category two game $430 (€371), and a category one game is $575 (€496).
Assuming a supporter will attend a group stage game, the average ticket price comes to €187 per person.
Ticket cost: €187.
The flight
Again, this can vary as FIFA continues to look for ways to make money by hosting the World Cup across three countries: the USA, Mexico and Canada.
In total, 16 cities will host matches, including the likes of New York, San Francisco, Mexico City and Vancouver.
The tournament gets underway on June 12, and airlines are already hiking up their prices to the major cities in preparation for the influx of bookings.
At the time of writing, a return flight from Dublin to New York in June costs around €831.
A return flight to Mexico City is around €1075, while flight costs to San Francisco and back are reaching €1815.
An average return flight cost could be in the ballpark of €1,240.
Flight cost: €1,240.
Accomadation
Again, this can vary depending on location and whether supporters will be happy to stay in budget hotels or would prefer something more fancy.
Based on a study of over 50,000 hotels in the US, the average price for a one-night stay is around $171. (€147).
In Mexico City, the accommodation cost averages around $63 (€54) per night, while in Vancouver it is $166 (€143).
It’s also worth noting that hotels will undoubtedly be increasing their prices over the World Cup, so those prices will only increase.
Average hotel cost: €114 per night
Cost of a pint
There’s no doubt the Irish will be wetting their whistles if they head across the pond to watch their team in action.
In major US cities, the average cost of a beer comes to around $9 (€8). In Mexico City, a beer will be around €2.75, while in Vancouver it is around €6.
Those prices are only likely to increase due to the number of fans flocking to their cities
Average beer cost: €6.25
If Ireland supporters fancy attending the World Cup next year, they can expect to pay around €1,541 per person for flight costs, a ticket and one night in a hotel.
Add in the cost of a couple of beers per person and a day’s worth of food, then fans may be looking to pay up to around €1,650 per person to spend 24 hours watching their side.
