St Pat’s threatened with partial stadium closure in bid to curb pitch encroachments

St Pat’s have been threatened with a partial stadium closure following numerous fan incidents.

The FAI’s Disciplinary Control Unit made the decision following a dramatic 3-2 victory over Cork City at Richmond Park.

It was a thrilling contest that saw the home side equalise in the 89th minute before Jamie Lennon grabbed a last-gasp winner.

Sparking wild celebrations, fans spilt onto the pitch to celebrate with the players. The three points them to fifth in the league.

It hasn’t been an isolated incident throughout the campaign and the FAI are keen to crack down on the behaviour.

St Pat’s statement on suspended partial stadium closure

In a statement posted on their official site, it read: “St Patrick’s Athletic have been informed by the FAI Disciplinary Control Unit of a suspended partial stadium closure for the remainder of the 2025 League of Ireland season.

“This is due to spectator conduct and pitch encroachments, the most recent of which was at our home game against Cork City on 16th of May.

“We have also received substantial fines throughout the season for these incidents.

“An incident of a similar nature in the future could result in the enforcement of a partial stadium closure.

“Whilst all at the club understand the emotion of scoring a last-minute winner, we remind all spectators that conduct such as pitch encroachments, use of pyrotechnics and the throwing of missiles leads to fines and sanctions for the club.”

Becoming a common trend

It was only last week when Bohemians wrote a letter to supporters to try and prevent any pitch encroachments.

Like their league rivals, Bohemians have also had to pay fines throughout the season, dished out by the FAI.

The statement to their supporters said: “We unfortunately have cause to remind all attending Bohemians games, home or away, that encroachments onto the pitch are strictly forbidden.

“Anyone identified as doing so faces sanctions and being banned from future games.

“The club has once again come under scrutiny from both the FAI and An Garda Síochána for pitch invasions, which have resulted in costly fines and sanctions, as well as additional security costs.

“We all appreciate the emotion of late winners and nobody at the club wishes to be scolding our supporters, the overwhelming majority of whom have helped generate a great atmosphere this season and have got behind the team vocally and in the right way.

“But encroachments onto the pitch and invading players’ space in their place of work cannot continue – neither can the repeated fines or additional security costs, which are a terrible waste of the club’s finite resources.”

League of Ireland set for another dramatic weekend

It’s a top-of-the-table clash as in-form Shamrock Rovers make the trip to Derry City.

Stephen Bradley’s side can extend their lead over their title rivals to eight points if they pull off a victory, although Derry have a game in hand.

St Pat’s host Waterford, while it’s a third versus fourth contest as Drogheda host Bohemians.

Damien Duff’s Shelbourne will look to get back to winning ways following consecutive defeats when they host Sligo Rovers.

Cork City will also travel to Galway United as they hope to close the gap and avoid a relegation play-off.
