St Pat’s goalkeeper Joseph Anang has been called up to the Ghana international squad for the first time.
The 24-year-old has been rewarded for his fine form with a call-up for the upcoming game against Nigeria on Wednesday evening.
If Ghana are victorious at Brentford’s GTech Community Stadium, they will play in the Unity Cup final on Saturday.
Anang first moved to St Pat’s on loan in January 2022, where he spent half the season before returning to his parent club, West Ham.
He then moved to Derby County on loan, but a small arm fracture ruled him out for the season.
After being released by the Hammers, he returned to Richmond Park on a permanent deal at the beginning of the campaign. He has played 25 times across all competitions this season.
Having featured for Ghana’s Under-23 side, Anang will be hoping to become St Pat’s ninth full international.
Anang, who featured for England’s Under-20 side, has been rewarded for seeking first-team football with a dream call-up.
In October, he said: “I’m just putting in the work and waiting for a call-up.
“We’ve been speaking the last two years but I was at West Ham as a No 3 and not playing.
“They might look at me more now and, hopefully in the future, you never know.”
Fortunately for manager Stephen Kenny, Anang will be available for Friday night’s trip to Sligo Rovers before the two-week break.
Anang has kept seven clean sheets in 18 league matches and three clean sheets in six Europa Conference League qualifier appearances.
St Pat’s failed to hold on to three points on Friday when Conan Noonan scored late to salvage a 2-2 draw for Waterford.
The visitors went ahead after two minutes through Tommy Lonergan before teenage star Mason Melia scored twice in five minutes.
The result leaves them in fifth, just a point behind both Bohemians and Derry.
Melia is enjoying his campaign for St Pat’s, knowing a record-breaking move to Tottenham is on the horizon.
In January, the Premier League club agreed a £1.6million fee for the forward which could rise to £3.2m.
However, he will have to wait until January 2026 before making the move to North London, meaning there is still time to enjoy for fans to enjoy watching Melia in a St Pat’s jersey.
