Shelbourne will face Shkendija of North Macedonia or Romanian champions FCSB in the Champions League third qualifying round if they can overcome Qarabag.
The draw for the next round was made at the headquarters of European football’s governing body in Nyon, Switzerland, today with Shels learning of what could lie ahead.
It is expected that FCSB will be favourites to progress in their tie, but first, Joey O’Brien’s men face a formidable two-legged test against Qarabag, starting with the visit of the 12-time Azerbaijan Premier League champions.
The priority for all at Tolka Park will be to secure a positive result to take to Baku for the return leg next week, with the goal of European group stage football firmly in their sights.
Joey O’Brien is well aware of the positive position his side is in, as a result of the crucial victory over Linfield in the first qualifying round. If they fall to Qarabag, further chances await the Drumcondra club in the Europa League and Conference League, but the former West Ham United and Bolton player won’t be getting carried away.
He did admit in the aftermath at Windsor Park that group stage action was the aim, as stressed to his players. He wants them to be ambitious and to aim high.
“Listen, that’s what it’s all about, said O’Brien.
“People in the background, the money and stuff like that, that’s to do with them. But I said to the boys in there, European football, you can’t beat it.
“When you’re done as a player, these are the nights you remember. But you can’t just be happy with this.
“We’re looking to get group stages. That’s the name of the game.”
If Shelbourne falls to Qarabag in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, they will face Rijeka of Croatia or Ludogorets from Bulgaria in the Europa League third qualifying round.

A much changed Shelbourne team secured a 4-0 victory over Fairview Rangers in the second round of the FAI Cup on Saturday.
The manager rang the changes with one-eye on the next Champions League test, as they carried on the feelgood feeling from Belfast.
A hat-trick from John Martin and a Daniel Kelly strike provided the goals, as the reigning League of Ireland champions proved too strong for the FAI Junior Cup winners.
The draw for the 2025 Sports Direct FAI Cup third round takes place tomorrow, July 22.
