Roy Keane has been named as an option for Manchester United’s interim manager.
The Red Devils sacked Ruben Amorim after poor results were coupled by the coach’s desire to challenge the hierarchy.
That left United in the lurch with Ineos now seeking a new boss to replace the Portuguese.
Former gaffer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made himself available and made it clear he fancied a crack at the role.
And the Norwegian has been in discussions with the board about potentially making it happen.
Talks have progressed but nothing has yet been confirmed.
And that’s why Keane has now been mentioned as an alternative to Ole with his no-nonsense approach.
United great Gary Pallister suggested his old teammate and reckons he’s just what the squad needs.
“Roy’s a big name and a legend – but so was Bryan Robson,” Pallister said.
“And he never got the chance to manage United even though he was in the management game for a period of time.
“Roy’s dipped in and out of management and made his name as an outspoken pundit now.
“He’s good value when you see him on the TV.
“He’d certainly command respect in the dressing room and shape it up, I have no doubt about that.”
The suggestion that Keane’s style would automatically become a success is certainly not guaranteed.
Players in recent times have become “protected”, says Pallister.
Managers can no longer run around chastising their stars with a more soft touch often sought.
That, for Pallister, is the only real drawback he can see to the Republic of Ireland legend becoming the gaffer.
Although Keane has often offered advice to ex-boss Amorim for dealing with these issues.
“Football is very protected,” he added.
“Someone like Roy and his aggressive managerial style, I don’t know if it would upset a few players in that dressing room.”
One thing is for certain which is that Manchester United need strong leadership.
Sir Alex Ferguson continues to be remembered, rightly, as the greatest of all time.
But Keane, with whom Fergie had an infamous fallout years ago, believes the Scottish giant continues to “linger like a bad smell”.
Speaking after United’s recent 2-2 draw at Burnley, Keano had his say.
And he didn’t hold back.
“You see who’s making the decisions at Man United,” Keane said on Sky Sports.
“You still have Ferguson and David Gill hanging around like a bad smell.
“Who’s making the decisions? [Sir Jim] Ratcliffe? [Jason] Wilcox?”
Keane’s comments may go a long way towards NOT landing him the interim role if he even wanted it.
But the veteran, 54, has always called it as he’s seen it.
Darren Fletcher is the current caretaker at Old Trafford with the former Scotland international a highly rated coach.
Michael Carrick is also believed to have held discussions with the board about the option.
