Rangers linked with Villarreal striker Etta Eyong

Rangers latest transfer speculation has seen the club linked with an interest in Villarreal striker, Etta Eyong.

The 21-year-old made his mark with the Yellow Submarines in their La Liga opener against Real Oviedo last week, grabbing the first goal in a 2-0 home win at El Madrigal.

Etta Eyong has been given his chance by head coach Marcelino after impressing for Villarreal B last season, in a campaign that yielded 19 goals and six assists.

His header against Oviedo followed a string of goals in pre-season, but there is doubt on where the Cameroon-born player will be plying his trade beyond the end of the transfer window.

Spanish outlet El Chiringito TV has credited several clubs with an interest in Etta Eyong, while conveying that he could have a fight on his hands to get regular football at Villarreal.

It has been claimed that Swansea City had a loan-to-buy option rejected, while Leeds United and Rangers are said to be chasing the player.

That is an interesting link given the 49ers ties between West Yorkshire and Glasgow, suggesting that intelligence on transfer targets is being shared.

The same source also stated Levante is looking into a loan deal for the striker, giving him another potential option in Spain, but it seems that Eyong wants to stake his claim at Villarreal “despite the competition he will face this year”.

The former Cadiz player started in attack beside Gerard Moreno against Oviedo, but it is expected that Villarreal will bring another senior striker to the club this month.

Rangers need for a new striker is clear

Etta Eyong represents a profile that will be encouraging to Rangers fans, given the need for quality up front at Ibrox.

With Russell Martin in the process of building a squad and implementing his style of play, it is clear that he needs to recruit a focal point to lead the line, to press quickly, and to make a difference.

Transfer speculation continues to surround Hamza Igamane, while Cyriel Dessers and Danilo continue to be inconsistent when presented with opportunities.

Rangers face Club Brugge in the Champions League Playoff round, in what is a tough test for a fragile team in the early days of Martin’s reign.

Football betting sites give the Gers odds of around 11/5 to take a lead to Belgium, with the visitors priced as 7/5 slight favourites to grab a first leg advantage.
