Paddy Kenny has been appointed goalkeeping coach with Matlock Town, the club has confirmed.
The former Republic of Ireland stopper, 47, is back in coaching after a spell out of the game.
His last position in football was back in 2023 when he had a brief stint as joint-manager at Goole AFC.
Before that the experience Premier League goalie had worked as a player/coach with Northampton Town in 2016.
In a lengthy statement, Matlock revealed their new coach’s experience in great detail.
And they shared their message of welcome to the seven-time Ireland full international.
“Matlock Town are pleased to announce the appointment of former Republic Of Ireland international Paddy Kenny to the role of goalkeeping coach,” the statement read.
“Paddy started his career in non-league with Ovenden West Riding before a spell at Bradford (Park Avenue).
“He signed professionally for Bury who were then managed by Neil Warnock.
“He spent four seasons at Bury before moving on loan – then permanently – to Sheffield United, again managed by Warnock.
“Paddy played over 300 times for United and was part of the side that achieved promotion to the Premier League in the 2005/06 season.
“Warnock signed Paddy for the third time, taking the goalkeeper to QPR in 2010.
“Paddy won the Championship in his first season and was voted Player of the Season for the campaign.
“He was a part of the famous game against Manchester City that saw City win the title and QPR survive on the final day, before he left to join Leeds United.
“He played every minute of the 2012/13 season.
“A 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic saw him make his 500th career appearance in the same season.
“After that, Paddy spent time at clubs including Bolton Wanderers and Ipswich Town.
“He also had a fifth spell under Neil Warnock at Rotherham, was player-coach at Northampton Town and had a brief spell as joint-manager of Goole AFC.
“As well as a stellar club career, Paddy played seven times for the Republic of Ireland.
“Welcome to the Gladiators, Paddy.”
Kenny’s relative inexperience in the coaching sphere may not necessarily work against him.
Cutting his teeth, so to speak, with an established club in the Northern Premier League Division One East.
It could be the making of the coach on the grass should it work out.
With Kenny’s experience it’s possible he could then move on to a bigger club down the line.
But the Gladiators will be pleased to use the wealth of experience he has until such time.
