Matthew Orr completes move from Linfield to Nottingham Forest

Linfield have confirmed the departure of highly-rated full-back Matthew Orr to Nottingham Forest.

The 18-year-old Northern Ireland U21 cap has completed his transfer to the City Ground for an undisclosed fee, which will see him link up initially with Forest’s B squad.

Newcastle United and Sunderland were said to be among other clubs that monitored the player, but Matthew Orr’s future now lies in the East Midlands, where he can pursue his Premier League dream.

Since breaking into David Healy’s Linfield team last summer, the youngster hasn’t looked back, fully capitalizing on the opportunity presented to him.

After a sustained run of form and impressive performances, his talent has now been acknowledged and rewarded with a move to a higher level, where Orr will attempt to emulate the progress of Trai Hume. He is another who moved from Windsor Park to Sunderland and now rubs shoulders with the elite in the Premier League.

Matthew Orr is the latest in a long line of talent to emerge from the Linfield conveyor belt and credit must go to the academy staff at the club for their nurturing and mentoring of the player.

“This is an exciting time for Matthew and his family, said Craig Mulholland, Head of Football Development & Talent Management at Nottingham Forest.

“Dan Kelly, our Head of Emerging Talent Recruitment, and our excellent scout in Northern Ireland, Jimmy Calvin, have tracked Matthew for some time.

Mulholland continued, “Having already benefited from lots of first-team football experience, Matthew’s journey will now see him exposed to the excellent teaching that Warren and Jody deliver in our B Team, with great technical and tactical challenges in our top games programme, including PL2 and the PL International Cup.

“We welcome Matthew to Forest and wish him good luck on this new chapter.”

Orr departure opens the door for Brown

The decision to fast-track Matthew Orr to the senior team and put trust in him has proved to be a shrewd one from David Healy, who now must rebuild without the talented teenager.

His departure now opens the door for Sean Brown to emerge as a Linfield first-team player, but the summer signing from Larne will be given ample time to find his feet at Windsor Park.

That signing would have been made with the potential of losing Orr, while the significant fee will go toward the £1 million plus earnings from the Blues’ European campaign this season.

As with other recent sales, Linfield will most likely have inserted a sell-on clause in the deal with Forest for Matthew Orr, who received the best wishes from the club on his big move across the water to England.

Linfield’s statement read, “Matty has been a dedicated member of our squad since breaking into the first team last summer, and we thank him for his commitment and contribution during his time at the club.

“The young defender made 37 appearances for the Blues, scoring two goals, including a goal on his senior debut against Stjarnan in the UEFA Conference League.

“We wish him every success as he takes this exciting next step in his career.”
