Keith Andrews continues to defy Brentford downfall expectations

Keith Andrews enjoyed another festive victory on Saturday, as his Brentford team continues to outperform pre-season expectations.

The Bees are currently in eighth place in the Premier League table, but it wasn’t supposed to be this way, according to many doubters, following the loss of manager Thomas Frank and key players such as Bryan Mbuemo and the previous captain, Christian Norgaard.

Over the summer, there was considerable skepticism surrounding the appointment of former Republic of Ireland international Keith Andrews, and with some justification.

It was a leap of faith from Brentford bosses, and one that is paying off, as we reach the turn of the year.

After Andrews’ team followed up their 2-0 victory over Wolves by convincingly beating Bournemouth 4-1, Andoni Iraola described Brentford as ‘a very good football team’, which will have been well received by his counterpart.

The consecutive wins have produced an excellent response to the disappointing League Cup exit against Manchester City, when a referee blunder led to a personal invite for Andrews from Pep Guardiola

Keith Andrews prepares to face old boss Thomas Frank and Tottenham

The West London side will face former boss Frank and Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, full of confidence and with justification.

The German coach’s return to the Gtech Community Stadium should add an extra touch of spice on and off the pitch, but the league table provides all the motivation required for the Bees.

A win over Spurs will take Brentford into the European qualification places. What a start to the New Year that would be.

Keith Andrews insists, “I don’t really feel people doubting me is a reason to be motivated, it’s not the reason why I’ve got to this stage in my life.

“I just focus on what I can control on a day-to-day basis.”

That front reflects the truth to an extent, but Andrews will derive a lot of satisfaction from his personal (and collective) performance.

With no senior managerial experience under his belt before this season, the former Brentford set-piece coach and one-time Ireland assistant coach is exceeding expectations and confounding critics.

Brentford have never had as many points at this stage of a Premier League season, which augurs well for the rest of the season as long as they can maintain their form.
