Caoimhin Kelleher needs to find a new club that will allow him to play regular minutes, says Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson.
The Liverpool stopper is set to leave Anfield this summer with Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardasvili replacing him. The Georgian signed for the Reds last summer but was loaned back to the Spanish side for the campaign.
His arrival will leave Liverpool with three top-class goalkeepers, although Alisson’s immediate future is also unknown.
Kelleher won’t have a shortage of options after impressing when handed his opportunity. The 26-year-old has played 20 times across all competitions this season and was a prominent figure during Alisson’s spell on the sidelines.
Premier League newbies Leeds and Brighton have been linked with moves for Kelleher. Leeds are looking for a new stopper to upgrade Illian Meslier, who was dropped towards the end of their promotion-winning campaign.
Brighton are seeking alternatives for Bart Verbruggen, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
Kelleher is a key figure in Hallgrimsson’s side and his international boss says he is “too good” to be playing second fiddle. He told the Irish Echo: “I just want Caoimhin to go to a club where he will play. He has been playing at the highest level.
“Champions League, Premier League, he’s done really well. I just want him to be happy and play regularly. I don’t mind where he goes so long as he is playing on a regular basis, he is too good not to be playing.’’
Kelleher has made it no secret of his desire to play regularly. Towards the end of last year, he said: “I’ve made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be number one and play week in, week out.”
He has been with Liverpool for six years and lifted his second Premier League title. He has played in all eight of Hallgrimsson’s games in charge so far.
Ireland have two friendlies against Senegal and Luxembourg next month before the World Cup qualifiers recommence in September.
