Ireland star sets new Guinness World Record for longest throw-in

Republic of Ireland international Megan Campbell has enjoyed a week she’ll never forget.

After helping steer the London City Lionesses to top-flight promotion, she then launched her way into the Guinness World Records.

With adjudicators watching on, Campbell set a new record for the longest ever throw-in by a female footballer. It measured 37.55 metres, eclipsing the previous record by just over two metres.

Her lengthy throws, replicating former Ireland player Rory Delap, became prominent last year when she launched a ball around 37 metres into the box in a game against England.

Speaking of her record, Campbell said: “It’s an amazing achievement for me personally to have that now, as the first ever.

“But ultimately, you want someone to beat you, I want someone to be more successful than me because then that means I’ve put another player in a better place.

“You’ve got to be someone that people can look up to and want to achieve things from, so of course I want someone to go on and beat my record.

“I think my record might stand for about a week until someone gets hold of the information.”

Campbell admitted the secret is well and truly out, but it’s a skill she’s always had in her back pocket. She added: “When I come up against an opponent now, it’s no secret I have a long throw.

“My throw developed when I was maybe about 12 or 13, I was playing for a boys’ team back home and my throw was longer than the boys’.

“As I grew up it got longer, it’s just something I’ve always had, I never specifically worked on it, but it’s something nice to have in the back pocket when needed.”

The 31-year-old defender has earned 55 caps for Ireland and has enjoyed a successful playing career that has seen her win a domestic treble with Manchester City and earn promotion with Liverpool.
