Former Republic of Ireland international Lee Carsley has signed a new contract which will extend his time as England U21 manager until 2027.
It is shrewd business by England’s Football Association to tie Carsley down for a couple more years. Especially as his time with various different England groups has been successful, particularly at U21.
Birmingham-born Carsley was eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland thanks to his grandmother, who was from Cork. He played a game each for the Ireland B and U21 teams. Before he made 40 appearances at senior level between 1997 and 2008 for the Boys in Green.
He was handed the England U20 manager role and beat Wales during his time with that age group. A year later, he made the step up to the U21 English side and guided them to success at the European U-21 Championship in 2023.
A talented young England side full of now familiar names such as James Trafford, Curtis Jones and Cole Palmer beat Spain 1-0 thanks to an injury-time goal from Jones in the first-half.
The experienced Carsley then answered the call to manage the England senior team on an interim basis when Gareth Southgate resigned after England lost consecutive European Championship finals.
Carsley won five of his six games in charge of the England senior team. His only defeat came against Greece at Wembley. His time managing the senior team came to an end last November after he led the side to promotion back to the top tier of the Nations League.
The 51-year old was supposedly one of the main targets for the FAI before they filled the national side’s managerial vacancy with Heimir Hallgrimsson.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Carsley’s name is mentioned in future conversations regarding the Irish football team’s manager role.
He has proven that he can work with and nurture young, exciting talents. Ireland have plenty of upcoming talents making their way up. Carsley’s managerial style would bring out the best in them.
But for now, Carsley is fully focused on bringing further success to the England U21 team. His main ambition this summer is to secure back-to-back European Championship titles for England.
After signing his new deal with the young Three Lions, Carsley said:
“I’m delighted to extend my time with the FA.
“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to work with a young, talented group and help develop them on the international stage.
“While the future is exciting, our immediate priority is this summer’s UEFA U21 Euros in Slovakia. As we attempt to emulate the achievement of Dave Sexton’s teams in 1982 and 1984.”
