Dundee United are considering a pre-contract deal for Republic of Ireland under-21s defender Evan Weir.
The Tangerines are hopeful of bolstering their defensive ranks ahead of next season.
And the club see Walsall man Weir as a strong candidate.
The 23-year-old has had a good campaign with the Saddlers so far and has made 26 appearances for the team..
He has also chipped in with four goals and the same number of assists in that time period.
A naturally left-sided centre-half, Weir can also turn out at left-back which is a spot in Jim Goodwin’s squad where the Arabs are light.
It is understood Dundee United are in discussions about a pre-contract for the Irishman.
They do, however, face some competition for the player.

It is also understood Weir has suitors in the EFL League One which is of interest to the former Drogheda United stopper.
Of course, in the Scottish Premiership there is always the opportunity for European football.
And if United have a strong end to the campaign they could end up playing qualifiers next term.
It is perhaps too early this year for Goodwin’s lads to finish in the Euro spots.
United are currently seventh in the division with the fixtures fast running out in the league.
But they will be in a spot to fight for the top six next year and maybe even beyond.
And that would likely help the Terrors convince Weir and others to make the switch to Scotland.
Weir has been part of the Republic of Ireland 21s set-up having trained with them on multiple occasions.
At 23 he is still young enough to push for a full Republic of Ireland A team call up.
With all due respect, however, that seems unlikely playing in England’s League Two.

And that is another potential advantage for United who do have international players in their team already.
Defender Iurie Iovu currently plays for the Moldova national squad and has four caps.
Within the Guinea-Bissau squad is United striker Panutche Camara who has one goal in seven outings.
As far as Weir is concerned, several United stars also play for their nations’ under-21s outfit.
As many as six youngsters play for the younger age groups with the likes of Scotland and Sweden respectively
Dundee United have been relatively quiet in the January transfer window thus far.
Only former Barnsley defender Neil Farrugia has arrived at the club at the time of writing.
