Evan Ferguson may have fended off an early end to his Roma career after his double against Celtic on Thursday.
The big Irishman found the back of the net twice for his side in their Europa League victory over the Hoops at Parkhead.
Ferguson’s international teammate Liam Scales had headed in a stunning own goal off the crossbar to hand the Romans the lead but the striker bagged a first-half brace himself.
It was one of the best showings from the 21-year-old since he joined on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion.
It comes as Roma had made the call to end Ferguson’s loan stint in the January transfer window with discussions between both clubs underway to determine the best way to go about terminating his deal.
However now, following their 3-0 win in Glasgow to go 10th in the League Phase, manager Gian Piero Gasperini explained how he had changed his tune on the forward.

For the veteran coach, Ferguson did enough to show he still had plenty about him to offer despite just one goal for the Serie A giants before Thursday night.
And he admitted he and the club may have to have patience with the Republic of Ireland cap as he is still adjusting to life outside of the UK and Premier League.
“During the game. he did what he often does in training. He’s a young lad and we have to be patient,” Gasperini told Sky Sport Italia.
“His second goal was beautiful. His performance was great, and it’s important that he plays with this spirit and shows his qualities.
“We have to be patient. These young guys could come good. Maybe it’s better that way rather than relying on the market.
“We’ll talk about the January window moving forwards, now, we have several important games to play.”
Gian Piero Gasperini calls for ‘patience’ with Ferguson
The implication from Gasperini is that he may now decide to keep hold of Ferguson beyond next month.
That would be a real shot in the arm for the player who had expected, perhaps, to make the return to the Seagulls where he would likely sit on the bench or in the stands.
Of course, other clubs have been interested in the front man – including Celtic who need a striker next month – and given the fact that he has only played for one team this season, he could still move elsewhere.
Ferguson has earned scathing reviews in the Italian media this season so far for his performances and lack of cutting edge.
His only goal in the league has come against Cremonese but he will be hoping his strikes vs Celtic can kickstart his campaign.
