Drogheda United dip toes into MLS transfer market before season begins with Jason Bucknor signing

Drogheda United have moved to dip their toe into the MLS transfer market after signing Jason Bucknor.

The former LA Galaxy player wing-back had been plying his trade with Ventura County before making the switch.

They are an affiliate club with Galaxy and Bucknor made 27 appearances there in 2025.

That move came about after the star had been drafted 20th overall in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft out of the University of Michigan.

At Michigan he was named in the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2021.

And he helped the club qualify for the NCAA tournament in 2024.

Now his move to Europe with Drogheda has excited the defender and captured the imagination of punters.

Bucknor himself expressed gratitude to the Premier Division side for taking a chance on him.

And he immediately set targets of silverware and trophies at United as he vowed to help them compete.

“It’s an honour to sign with Drogheda United, and I can’t wait to integrate with the team,” he said.

“I’m excited to bring joy to the fans with my style of play.

“And to help win many games as we fight for trophies together.”

Manager Kevin Doherty also spoke after the signing.

And he revealed his excitement at being able to work with the American on a full-time basis.

“When I first watched Jason, I got really excited,” the boss said.

“He’s a strong attacking option for us on both sides, whilst also being excellent defensively.

“He is predominantly a right sided player but has played a lot of games on the left and can play in a number of different roles.

“He’s a player I think the supporters should be excited about.

“He’s strong physically, has excellent athletic ability, and contributes to goals.

“We had a number of conversations with him before joining us, and I’m really looking forward to having him join the group.”

Bucknor second signing from USA this winter

It is a deal which signals clear intent from Drogheda to work in that same market.

Just recently the club snapped up Leo Burney, another American, from Seattle Sounders.

Bucknor may be desperate to win medals in Ireland but it won’t be easy.

The club finished their season last term in sixth spot and 15 points behind eventual winners Shamrock Rovers.

To compete this season they will need more than a full-back to perform to his best.

But the transfer window will surely bring more new faces before the season kicks off next month.
