Dominik Szoboszlai is still rattled by Troy Parrott with petty social media antics

Dominik Szoboszlai is seemingly still rattled by Troy Parrott after ‘liking’ a post on social media after the striker’s Panenka penalty miss.

The Liverpool midfielder was forced to deny accusations that he antagonised the Ireland bench after his team-mate put Hungary ahead in that crucial World Cup qualifier.

Szoboszlai was seen putting his hand to his nose and wiggling his fingers in celebration, but later suggested it was an inside joke among his team-mates.

Parrott would have the last laugh by scoring a famous hat-trick, including a 98th-minute winner, to send Ireland into the play-offs and knock Hungary out of World Cup contention.

Ireland will meet the Czech Republic in March, with the winner to host either Denmark or North Macedonia for a spot on the plane.

Dominik Szoboszlai ‘likes’ Troy Parrott misfortune

Last weekend, Parrott went from hero to zero for AZ Alkmaar when he inexplicably fired a last-minute Panenka penalty over the crossbar in his side’s 1-0 defeat to FC Twente.

His effort went viral for all the wrong reasons, and Parrott had to apologise to his team-mates in the aftermath of the disappointment.

AZ Alkmaar’s Peer Koopmeiners was so furious that he had to sit in an ice bath to cool off.

With the video doing the rounds on social media, some eagle-eyed viewers had noticed that Szoboszlai had ‘liked’ a video showing Parrott’s penalty miss.

Alongside the video was the caption: “A moment to forget for Troy Parrott.”

Ireland supporters found the funny side, with one writing ‘good to see he’s still fuming’ while another added ‘Parrott’s living rent-free forever.’

Parrott assist helps redeem himself

AZ Alkmaar ended their run of three consecutive domestic defeats on Wednesday with a 3-1 away victory over PEC Zwolle.

Parrott, who was recently crowned Holland’s most fashionable footballer, played a key role by picking up his second assist of the season.

The 23-year-old’s scintillating form this season, which includes 14 goals in 18 games for his club, has increased transfer speculation surrounding his future beyond January.

Leeds are believed to be interested as they eye a new striker to help bolster their Premier League survival bid.

Bundesliga side Stuttgart are also in the mix as they continue their ambitions to secure Champions League football this season.

St Etienne’s Lucas Stassin was their first choice, but have been priced out of a move with the French side demanding €40million.

Newcastle frontman William Osula is also a target, and the Toon may let him leave if the price is right but they face competition from Eintracht Frankfurt.

AZ Alkmaar are unlikely to accept a transfer bid under €31million, despite having signed him for €8m around 18 months ago.
