Derry City expecting further signings ahead of the new season

Derry City have already brought in seven new players for the 2026 League of Ireland season, but the club are planning on further signings.

Josh Thomas was confirmed as a Derry player on Monday, with the Welshman joining on a six-month loan deal from Swansea City.

He joins the high-profile capture of James McClean, while his brother Patrick has also completed his return to the Maiden City.

The other new players at the Ryan McBride Brandywell include James Clarke, James Olayinka, Rob Slevin, and Darragh Markey.

However, Tiernan Lynch isn’t stopping there, with the Derry Journal reporting that “the boss isn’t finished in the market just yet, with ideally three or four new faces to come.”

Despite the return of Conor Barr from his loan at Cliftonville, the Candystripes are believed to be targeting another right-back, as well as a central defender.

Further intrigue was added to the situation with the news that the club is monitoring an unnamed Portuguese attacker who can operate out wide and through the middle.

Derry City depart for Spain

On Monday, Tiernan Lynch’s squad trained at Newry City en route to Dublin Airport, where they boarded a plane to Spain for a pre-season training camp.

The group will be based at a facility in Malaga over the coming days to fine-tune preparations for the new season, with the curtain raiser less than two weeks away.

Derry City will take on Shamrock Rovers in the President’s Cup at Tallaght Stadium on Saturday 31 January.

While the Candystripes are aiming to land further new arrivals, there will be more exits.

One of those was confirmed today with the news that Scottish winger Adam Frizzell has completed a permanent transfer to reigning NIFL Premiership champions, Linfield.

The 27-year-old arrived at the Brandywell last June, penning an 18-month deal, but both parties have come to a mutual agreement, opening up a free transfer to the Windsor Park club.
