Odhran Casey is set to clinch a £100,000 (€115,000) transfer from Cliftonville to Shelbourne after a deal was reached between the clubs.
The 23-year-old will depart North Belfast for North Dublin, having played in the Reds’ 2-2 draw away to Ballymena United in the NIFL Premiership on Tuesday evening.
With an agreement in place, that will be Casey’s last game for Cliftonville in what has been a resounding success story for the academy product.
Current Solitude boss Jim Magilton has been more than willing to blood youngsters to aid their development. Although Casey made his debut in 2019 when he was just 16, his progress has accelerated under the tutelage of the former Ipswich Town manager.
Odhran Casey has been a standout for Cliftonville at centre-back this season, winning three Player of the Month awards, but he has now earned the greater reward of full-time professional football in the League of Ireland.
It will be a step-up compared to what Casey is familiar with in the NIFL Premiership, but the player is primed to take on the challenge.
As reported by the Belfast Telegraph, Shels are thought to have beaten Derry City, Coleraine, and other cross-channel clubs in the race to sign Odhran Casey, having tracked the player for some time.
Cliftonville now have a significant void to fill in their team, but the transfer was too good to turn down, with the potential add-ons taking the deal beyond £100,000.
Casey established himself as a crucial component of the Reds’ side, following strong and steady form at the heart of the defence, but he can also operate in midfield.
He was an important figure in the historic Irish Cup run in 2024, which culminated in their first success in the competition since 1979, but he broke his leg in the first half of the victory.
To his credit, Odhran Casey has recovered emphatically from that setback and he is now set for Drumcondra and a new stage in his career under Joey O’Brien.
He joins new Shels signings such as Swedish midfielder Maill Lundgren and Conor Walsh, with more expected ahead of the 2026 LOI season.
