BBC Pundits Pat Nevin, James McFadden, and Stephen Warnock delivered a damning critique of Russell Martin’s Rangers team following the 3-1 defeat to Club Brugge this week.
The trio were speaking on the BBC’s Champions League highlights show on Wednesday night, looking back on the first leg action from Ibrox, which has all but ended the Gers aspirations to play in Europe’s top club competition this season.
The visitors grabbed two goals in the first seven minutes, and by the 20-minute mark, Brugge had blown Rangers away, through a combination of incisive finishing and taking advantage of a vulnerable opponent.
Martin’s team isn’t yet settled with the way he wants to play. So far, it’s too open, unconvincing, and lacking cohesion. The players don’t seem to trust or believe in what they are being asked to do, or they are incapable of carrying out the brief.
The problems continue, and even at this early stage, the pressure is on Russell Martin.
In the BBC studio, reflecting on the game, Pat Nevin stated:
“That naivety stunned me, and it stunned the whole of Ibrox.
“In 20 minutes, the game is just finished,” continued the former Chelsea player, leading to commentary from Stephen Warnock.
“They’re very passive, aren’t they? He opined. “When you watch them they don’t know how to close down, when to close down as a unit.
James McFadden joined the conversation to state, “How open were they in the clips you showed (referring to presenter Eilidh Barbour). It’s not good enough, but the recovery to get back, every player (is) jogging back into position. There’s no desire to get back in and stop it.
He continued, “I understand you want to be open, you want to have the ball and you want to play, but when you don’t have the ball, you need to be narrow, you need to be compact, you need to be difficult to play through.”
The @BBCSport pundits were stunned at how open and "naive" Rangers looked in their #UCLplayoff defeat to Club Brugge. 😬

Warnock went on to reference that Rangers’ play reminded him so much of Martin’s Southampton in the Premier League, when they were brutally exposed playing an open, expansive game, often making mistakes and leaving the back door open, and getting fully punished for it, against top opposition.
Russell Martin is adamant he will get it right, that the team will improve, but the Rangers fans are struggling to see something to believe in.
The reaction from the stands was ferocious, many left at 3-0 on Tuesday, and the boos were loud and clear at half-time.
The second half was better, with Rangers pulling one goal back, but that was Club Brugge sitting on a comfortable lead.
It will be very difficult for to recover the situation in Belgium next week, but before that there is a massive, must win game on Sunday in St. Mirren v Rangers.
The pressure is building, and patience is in short supply, Russell Martin’s Rangers simply must win to buy time if he is to get the supporters on his side and ultimately for his team to deliver on his pledges on the pitch.
