Cork City have unveiled Gerard Nash as their new manager as they plot to avoid relegation.
The club have moved swiftly to replace Tim Clancy, who left following Cork’s 2-1 defeat against Derry on Friday. They are currently ninth, three points off the bottom.
Their recent defeat leaves Nash’s new side eight points away from eighth as they aim to avoid a relegation play-off.
Nash, 38, is making his first foray into senior management, having built up his coaching experience over the years. A promising player in Ipswich’s academy, he was forced to retire early with two serious knee injuries.
He spent 14 years with Ipswich, including coaching the Under-23s and first team, before becoming one of the FAI’s High Performance Coaches in 2021.
A move to Aston Villa followed, where he was head coach of the Under-18 side and later opened himself up to new experiences by becoming an assistant at Swedish top flight side GAIS.
Nash will have a job on his hands to get his side climbing the table, but believes he has the quality in the dressing room to do so. He said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be appointed as the new Men’s First Team Manager at Cork City.
“Everyone in Ireland knows the history that the club has, its fantastic support base, and the potential within the existing players. I have watched a lot of the league this season from afar, and I have no doubt that there is so much more we can deliver.
“Everyone in the league knows that Cork City are one of the biggest clubs in the country and Turner’s Cross is a great place to watch a game of football. I know we have quality in the dressing room, and I cannot wait to get started.”
Owner Dermot Usher shared those sentiments and added in the statement: “I am very pleased to welcome Ger to the club. He has a long and very impressive track record as a coach, and he really impressed us with his thoughts on taking on the role.
“From speaking to him, I know how motivated he is to take on the job, and I know he will give it everything he has. Everyone at the club wants to see us improve and begin to climb the table, and I share Ger’s belief that we have the talent in our dressing room to improve.”
