Martin O’Neill drops major Celtic return clue after Wilfried Nancy sack

Martin O’Neill could be in line for yet another interim stint as Celtic manager.

Wilfried Nancy was sacked by the Hoops on Monday afternoon following a dismal run of results.

The Frenchman is officially one of the worst managers in the club’s history with six defeats from eight.

His unwanted record cost him his job in Glasgow and leaves the position open to replace him.

Assistant Kwame Ampadu was also bulleted as was head of football operations Paul Tisdale.

The former MK Dons and Stevenage boss was the man credited for bringing Nancy to the table.

It leaves Celts trailing Hearts in the Scottish Premiership by six points in second spot.

And that is unacceptable for the club.

That means O’Neill – who had a successful interim stint last year – could be in line for a dugout return.

The board still have to make the decision to make on Nancy’s replacement.

And if they move for Irishman O’Neill, he’ll have another big job on his hands to steady the ship for a second time.

It all depends, of course, on whether or not the 73-year-old fancies it.

But O’Neill may well have dropped a significant hint that he might be open to it again.

And that clue may have come inadvertently.

O’Neill was set to return to Celtic on Saturday as part of Sky Sports’ broadcast as a member of their punditry team.

However, he would eventually cancel his plans before Celts lost 3-1 to rivals Rangers at Parkhead.

That may have been down to the awkward questions asked by the broadcaster.

Would Martin O’Neill return to Celtic

It may also have come down to the potential for supporters to sing his name and therefore undermine Nancy in the job.

Tellingly, though, O’Neill also scrapped plans to be part of a Celtic fan live show.

The former boss had planned to take to the stage with A Celtic State of Mind for a Q&A session.

But it was confirmed by the team that O’Neill had cancelled without providing a detailed explanation as to why.

O’Neill may have known what was coming.

And it remains to be seen whether or not that will be a job offered to him once again.

It would also be anticipated that Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham would return to help their gaffer.

Until Celtic do find another permanent manager, they could do worse than asking one of their greatest to take the reins.
