Shamrock Rovers captain Roberto ‘Pico’ Lopes and his Cape Verde team-mates have qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking the first time the island nation has qualified for football’s biggest competition.
The Blue Sharks, as they’re known, have steadily risen in African football, and this qualification is the culmination of years of development and determination. Central to their success is the Shamrock Rovers captain Lopes, whose leadership and defensive prowess helped guide the team through a challenging qualification campaign. On the road to the 2026 World Cup, Cape Verde have impressed with disciplined performances, strong teamwork, and key wins over more established sides.

This historic milestone has ignited celebrations across the islands and among the Cape Verdean diaspora worldwide. Their World Cup debut not only boosts national pride but also puts Cape Verde firmly on the global football map; they’re now the second smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup.
With a talented squad and growing support, the team heads to the tournament with confidence and the hopes of a nation behind them.
Cape Verde beat Eswatini, the country formerly known as Swaziland, 3-0 on Monday night to win CAF Group D with 23 points, four points clear of Cameroon and now can look forward to a lnadmark World Cup next year.
Dubliner Lopes made a difference on Monday when he played his part in Dailon Rocha Livramento’s goal in the 48th minute. Before Willy Semedo added a second minute later. Cape Verde’s iconic Stopira marked his return from retirement with a goal in stoppage time.
“I can’t really put it into words at the moment,” said fan favourite Lopes, reflecting on Cape Verde’s qualification.
“It’s such a surreal feeling. The overwhelming relief at the end of the game, the realisation that we did it, we’re going to go to the World Cup.
“I’m overjoyed at the moment, and it’s an amazing feeling.”

The story of Lopes’ international career is made even more remarkable after former Cape Verde coach Rui Aguas first contacted the Shamrock Rovers defender on LinkedIn in 2018. He wanted to discuss the prospect of him playing for the national team because he was eligible through his father. Lopes originally thought it was a scam/error at first and only took the message seriously when Auguas followed up in English.
Lopes took to the Shamrock Rovers’ x platform at full-time to thank fans of the Dublin club while confirming he will feature this Friday for the Hoops as they hope to finally win the league title when they take on St Patrick’s Athletic.
