Ireland coach Gary Wilson says Ireland are looking for a series win

Former Irish cricket and current batting and wicketkeeping coach Gary Wilson has talked up Ireland’s aspirations ahead the upcoming series against the two-time T20 World Cup winners, the West Indies.

There is an excellent chance for this Ireland side to lay down a real marker that will be noticed by the rest of the cricketing world. They’ll do that by winning the three-match series that starts on Thursday.

Ireland played the West Indies in a one-day series that finished 1-1 after the second game between the two countries was abandoned thanks to the weather.

Ireland have a bit of a mixed record against the tourists going into the series. They’ve won three and lost three of their previous T20Is against the West Indies. Ireland’s most notable encounter with their opponents in recent years was their triumph by nine wickets in their World Cup clash in 2022.

Wilson, who played for Ireland for an impressive 15 years between 2005 and 2020, spoke to the BBC about Ireland’s hopes for the series.

Ireland have ‘big ability to get big results’ – Gary Wilson

“We have had a decent record against the West Indies over the past number of years, and it’s a great place to play cricket here. The locals really get behind it. It’s a hotbed of Irish cricket, obviously, we know how good they are in this form of cricket. It’s definitely the format they feel most comfortable in. But we’re looking forward to the challenge and hopefully the weather plays ball,” Wilson said as quoted by the BBC.

“We’ve shown a big ability to get big results, especially on the global stage over the last number of years. Now we’re looking to put that into series wins rather than one-off games.”

Adair looks ahead to West Indies challenge

Ireland will be delighted with the news that Mark Adair is back in the squad for their T20 series against the West Indies after recovering from injury.

“They’re one of the best teams in the world, in my opinion. I think they’ve got some of the most exciting cricketers and are one of the most entertaining teams to watch. This is a fresh challenge, and we’ll get after it. Hopefully, we can do the business. The aspiration is to win the series. I think we match up pretty well, and I’m looking forward to getting back out there”
