Caoimhin Agyarko has risen from third to second in the latest WBA super-welterweight rankings.
The undefeated Belfast man is also ranked #7 with the IBF at light-middleweight as he closes in on a world title shot.
One major change in the WBA rankings at super-welterweight sees Caoimhin Agyarko make a move up the ranks from third to second.
The Belfast man was previously ranked behind Pavel Sosulin and Isaac Lucero at 154-pounds with the WBA, but has now climbed one spot and overtaken Lucero as the second rated fighter with the governing body.
Agyarko may not be one of five Irish boxers ranked in the WBC top 10 across all of boxing’s weight classes, but he is as high as #2 with the WBA and #7 with the IBF at light-middleweight.
This move in the latest WBA rankings sees ‘Black Thunder’ close in on world honours at super-welterweight with his maiden challenge for a world title belt within touching distance.
UP 1 FOR AGYARKO

The current WBA world champion is Abass Baraou, who is facing WBO champion Xander Zayas in a unification bout in just a few weeks time. Jaron Ennis is the interim champion with the WBA too, with Agyarko then just behind Sousulin and the two aforementioned champions.
Although this move is a positive one for Agyarko in terms of his world ranking with the WBA, it doesn’t change much in regards to his chances of challenging for the black and gold belt anytime soon.
With Zayas vs Baraou happening next, the winner of that fight will likely opt for a defence against a bigger name than Agyarko. Ennis is an attractive first defence for the winner of that fight, leaving Agyarko waiting for his shot for even longer.
Although this move from second to third might not mean a world title shot is any nearer for Agyarko, it does mean he is being recognised on the world stage as a force and major player in the 154-pound division.

As well as being ranked at #2 in the latest WBA world super-welterweight rankings, Caoimhin Agyarko is also ranked inside the top 10 by another prestigious governing body.
The IBF rankings have the 18-0 light-middleweight listed at #7. Although Agyarko is seventh with the IBF, the first and second spots are currently vacant, meaning he is technically ranked as high as fifth at this moment in time.
Furthermore, the IBF called for Caoimhin Agyarko vs Brandon Adams in a final eliminator for their belt. The winner of Agyarko vs Adams would become the mandatory challenger for current IBF king Bakhram Murtazaliev.
Given that Agyarko has been called to fight in a final eliminator for the IBF world title belt at 154-pounds, it seems he is more likely to go down the IBF route than he is to go down the WBA route.

This may seem illogical on the surface given the 29-year-old is ranked higher with the WBA, but makes sense given the current state of play with the WBA and the likelihood of Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis fighting the winner of Abass Baraou vs Xander Zayas for the unified titles.
Regardless of rankings with particular governing bodies, it is apparent that ‘Black Thunder’ has the 154-pound division on notice and is firmly closing in on his shot at one of the four world title belts.
Whether it be the IBF, WBA or even one of the other two belts (WBC/WBO), Agyarko isn’t far away from landing his maiden shot at world honours and the chance of becoming the latest Irish fighter to win a world title belt.
Time will tell whether Agyarko achieves this feat or not. For now though, he’s in a strong position as 2026 kicks off. It could be a big year for Belfast’s Caoimhin Agyarko.
