Giannis Antetokounmpo expected to stay with Milwaukee Bucks despite trade noise

Giannis Antetokounmpo is now expected to remain with the Milwaukee Bucks after intense speculation over his future in Wisconsin.

Earlier this spring following Milwaukee’s third consecutive first round playoff exit, Antetokounmpo’s willingness to remain with the Bucks was the subject of intense debate.

ESPN insider Shams Charania even reported that for the very first time, the 30-year-old was open-minded to leaving the team who drafted him in 2013.

As one of basketball’s all-time greats already, Antetokounmpo is unlikely to want any more of his prime years to go to waste but it appears a trade isn’t a likely scenario as of now.

Charania’s colleague Brian Windhorst said: “The league has come to terms with the real realization that the Bucks are going to keep him in. Giannis is not going to ask for a trade.”

According to the best betting sites in Ireland, the Bucks are a 70/1 chance to win the 2025-26 NBA Championship.

Antetokounmpo’s contract features a $62 million player option coming up in 2027 and he’s set to hit free agency in 2028 if he doesn’t reach an extension with the Bucks.

Milwaukee finished as the five seed in the Eastern Conference this past season as the ‘Greek Freak’ averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds and 6.5 assists a night.

It marked his second year in a row averaging 30-10-5 on 60% shooting from the floor – which no other NBA player has managed to do once.

Antetokounmpo’s name is rarely left out when discussing the top two or three players in the league and his resume speaks for itself.

The forward led the Bucks to their first NBA championship since 1971 in 2021, winning Finals MVP in the process and closing the series out with a 50-point game against the Phoenix Suns.

Antetokounmpo is a two-time league MVP in 2019 and 2020, with nine All-Star honors, seven All-NBA First Team selections and a Defensive Player of the Year award.

He is one of three players (LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) to win two MVPs before turning 26 – and in 2020 joined only Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon to win MVP and DPOY in the same season.

The 6ft 11in big man has quite the knack for making history – even before developing into a superstar, he led the Bucks in all five major statistical categories in 2016-17, also becoming the first player to finish a regular season in the top 20 in total points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
